I have met a really lovely man, I knew he was a drinker but he has confided in me that he is an alcoholic. He wants help and I want to support him. How can I support him best?

Going to the doctor is the first step - they can give you medication to take away cravings. Then contact AA - they will give help and advice.

You can help your friend by supporting him, and not judging him. Ultimately though it is up to your friend to get help. He can look up the phone number for Alcoholics Anonymous and find out when and where meetings are being held, or he may need to check himself into a rehab facility. He's already taken an important step on the road to recovery which is admitting that he is an alcoholic. You yourself could attend Al-Anon meetings in your area which would give you a better idea of exactly what he's going through. Plus it would give you a chance to voice any concerns that you may have about what is happening in the recovery process. I wish you both the best of luck and just remember that the best thing that you can do is support him during this time.

Go to alanon meetings. Sometimes they take place the same time as an AA meeting and are in the same building too.

It is a long road to travel. Is he a drinkig alcoholic or a non drinking alcoholic? It matters. The one that is still drinking is not much fun and makes poor decisions. He also does tupid things and tries to make others feel bad.

Seek out an Alanon Group in your area. Alcoholism not only affects the alcoholic himself but also family, friends, co-workers and other. Alanon will give you some very good information on how to cope with the alcoholic in your life. First of all, the person himself has to admit his problem or he cant be helped by anyone. Steer him to AA!

By encouraging him to go to A A where he will get the help and understanding he needs to fight his addiction.I myself joined A A when my alcholisim started to cause me serious personal and work related problems ,I have been sober now for twenty three years and I owe that sobriety to my membership of A A and to the many good friends I have among its members

I would take him to an AA meeting. Although I have never been to one, I do know that is has been sucessful in helping many, many people. I also heard that friendships develop there and the meetings can sometimes be rather enjoyable.

get him signed up for AA and/or counseling. If you really dig the guy, start doing stuff together like hiking, bike rides, exercising, etc... activities where you're out and about keeping busy. Good luck.
