Even though Kerry misspoke, wasn't what he said the truth? How many rich, college educated men & women have volunteered to serve in Iraq, compared to high school drop-outs & poor kids? I'm sure the number of people with higher learning is far, far less than the number of college students! Probably even as high as 20 to 1.

Your lost hero.

Fact is the Soldiers in the military are more educated than the Civilian sector.

99.9 percent of the enlisted forces have at least a high school education, 73.3 percent have some college, 16.2 percent have an associate’s degree or equivalent semester hours, and 4.7 have a bachelor’s degree.

What’s more, over 85 percent of field grade officers have advanced degrees – 70.7 percent have master’s degrees, 12.1 percent have professional degrees and 2.5 percent have doctorate degrees.

I have two degrees. How many do you have?

You can manipulate the stats to prove what ever you want to. Almost 100% of officers in Iraq are college educated. Unless you have a waver you have to have a high school diploma to get into the military these days. Even if what you say is true what point are you making. I went into the Army as a high school drop out in the 60's. Learned a skill. I was a medic. Failed to duck in time and was put out on a medical. Then I went to collage and ended up with an RN and have made good money ever since. The military has been a path of upward mobility in this country for a long time. Lets not forget that Kerry was a Yale grad who went OCS and served as an officer in the Navy. I am not too sure that he knows a lot about line grunts.

Actually the percentage of those who have high school diplomas in the US military is very high. Somewhere around 95%+ which is far more than the average for the entire US population. Many are only in the 18-22 age group and intend on going to college after they get out of the service on the GI bill. Percentages of those with some college vary depending on the branch of service but all variables considered the US military is far more educated today then it ever has been and is without a doubt the best educated and best trained fighting force assembled on earth.

Kerry needs to learn how to admit he was wrong and apologize. Regardless of his true convictions he said what he said, and it was an insult whether it was intended or not.

US Army standards are that 90% or more of the recruits must have a High School Diploma. People with a GED must demonstrate above-average intelligence.

At least some college education is required of all NCOs. Junior enlisted soldiers are 'encouraged' to attend college classes (and the military generally pays for those classes).

As a result the ratio you should expect to see will be 20 college educated soldiers to every 1 high school dropout.

There are more college educated people in the military than you'd think. Research how many commissioned officers there are. They all hold college degrees.

There are also many NCO's with college degrees.

The military is mostly made of people from the middle class.

You're sure as hell wrong about 20 to 1.

**warrant officers are not commissioned. Just an FYI.

The DOD puts a limit on the number of non-grads the military can enlist per year. That number is 8%, so guy do the quick math. The Army made their recruiting mission last year of 80,000 active duty soldiers that being said no more than 6,400 of them could be HS dropouts, which by the way have to have atleast their GED's to enlist.

Not all commissioned officers hold college degrees. Warrant Officers are commissioned officers who come from the enlisted ranks, and they do not have to have a college degree.

That being said, you have to have either a diploma or a GED to enlist. So, I doubt there are very many dropouts in the military.

No-- I saw stats posted on this yesterday (they were Air Force stats) Those below are based on link I've referenced though.

99% (or there abouts) of enlisted have at least high school diploma

A large percentage have Bachelors or more advanced degrees.
Most officers have at least Bachelors degrees.

The report linked below also points out that in general, miliary enlistees are better educated than the population in general. For example, 98% of enlistees have HS diploma or better compared to 75% of the general population.

See link below for an analysis of military demographics...
They have demographics posted on these things-- check out the military sites.

its actually quite difficult for someone without a HS diploma to get into the military. only a very small number of slots for GED holders are available each year, and they must score higher on the ASVAB(50 vice 35).

The answer to your question - no. Not even close.

Actually, the average military person is more educated per capita than the average non-military person. Plenty of stats for this....easy to google.
