I wore platform shoes and walked through the metal detector. It did NOT beep but the security guy pulled me aside and insisted that I remove my shoes.

Think about it... A weapon doesnt need to be made of metal.. And platform shoes can odviously hide something much more easly then regular shoes can...

Random security/scare tactics.
Funny how shoes were not a threat until someone tried something with them. Then there have been no instances of this ever happening again. How many things that you take with you now will be used as a weapon someday and forever more subject passengers to searches?
And now, airlines are allowing some liquids back on again. Did they become safe again? Did they have it wrong in the first place?
And I rant...

Anyway, they are worried that you are carrying some explosives that would not show up in a metal detector.

Some people put drugs in those types of shoes. I mean, of course, it cannot be a weapon because the detector would go off. But if you have drugs, it would not beep, so it's all part of management and safety. Hey, I think it's a bunch of bull, but that's just me. Good luck, Safe trip.

All shoes have to be removed and checked through the x ray machine. Explosives and other items can be concealed in the heals and platforms. Its the done thing now after the terrorist antics

Explosives would not show up in a metal detector, but could be visible in x-ray examination. Richard Reid did this to us; he will have a long time to contemplate the inconvenience that he has caused the rest of us.

Actually that particular guard has a Foot Fetish and wanted to get a closer look at your feet.

NO, all the above answers are the reason. Even 90 year old women with flip flops on have to take them off.

To make sure your not hiding anything, even if it's non metal. I have a small box cutter on my keychain that doesn't set off metal detectors for work.

Have you never seen Trainspotting, with Sick Boy's works hidden in a half-inch heel? You could easily stash all sorts of stuff in platform boots!

Because it is easy to conceal items that cannot be detected in the metal detector.
