Not sure what's "required" but what a good officer will provide?

1. A copy of the ticket.
2. A copy of your driving record.

Beyond that, a good defense lawyer will ask for:

1. A copy of the calibration record for the radar gun. State Troopers are assigned one car with one gun, and they always have it. County Police often show up without these records and judges (particularly in Northern Counties - near D.C.) are prone to throw the ticket out if the officer can't produce the records.

Beyond that, nothing more.

Is it a state cop? Ask if he really has jurisdiction, considering the fact that Virginia calls itself a CommonWealth, and not a state. On second though, i think that would be a bad idea!
