I don't know too much about what catholics believe, I'm a christian. But I don't think it would mean anything if only a priest forgave you. If you want to have forgiveness and be right with God, God has to forgive you, so you have to go to Him if you want Him to forgive you, you can't do it through another person.

No. Only God can forgive. The priest pronounces absolution, i.e. says that God has forgiven you. However, at the ordination service the priest is empowered "to bind the sins of men and angels". One wonders about the origin of that.

The priest is supposed to be God's representative on earth and through the priuest the person receives grace and forgiveness in the form of absolution.
Believe what you will out of that.........I used to believe .....but have seen the system abused at my expense so now have become more cynical I am afraid.

A priest can minister God's forgiveness, a spiritual gift bestowed upon priests when God in the Person of Jesus Christ told the first priests of His Church, "whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven them". Pretty straightforward!

no.

According to dogma it is not the priest but God who does the forgiving, the priest only initiates the sacrament of confession

In the catholic religion, the priest can "absolve" you of your sins if you do "penance" such as repeating 10 hail mary's, 20 our father's, etc....all of which is garbage! Only GOD can forgive sin, and thanks to Jesus, we can now come directly to Him for cleansing and forgiveness!

Yes ,because Jesus (after the resurrection) said "whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven" also the sins you forgive shall be forgiven and the sins that you retain shall be retained in heaven"

No, only if you repent and ask Jesus for forgiveness, bring your sins to the cross. Its the only way.

Get in line in that processional
Step into that small confessional
There, the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original
If it is, try playin' it safer
Drink the wine and chew the wafer
Two, four, six, eight
Time to transubstantiate
So get down upon your knees
Fiddle with your rosaries
Bow your head with great respect
And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect
