Hi I wrote once before reguarding my 7 year old cat having a strange black pea size hard black bump underneth her chin, it comes and then goes away. People suggested it might be cat acne and to switch her dishes and only use stainless steel. I've done this and wheater it has a connection or not, it is again clearing up. BUT NOW I'VE NOTICED SOMETHING NEW NOW. Today I happened to look at her back front paw from behind (if this was a person it would be around the back foot above the heel part) and noticed a little smaller then a dime size black hard bump protrouding out, almost like the same thing as the chin thing on her front back arm part. It's not the part she walks on and it doesn't seem to be bothing her, but then I noticed another one of the same thing on the other front back paw? It almost resembles the black pad on a cats paw, but it just developed in this location. Has anybody ever heard of something like this? What is it? I will take her to the vet, but what is this?

Hi there..I assume you are looking at that funny little footpad that sits up higher than the rest of your cat's toes.

This is what is left of a residual "heel" or dewclaw pad (more like the heel of your hand than your foot.)that has evolved up higher in cats and other 4-legged creatures.

Press you fingers flat against the floor, palm lifted toward you. Think of your cat as walking this way. Up where the heel of your hand is, is the same as where your cat's extra pad is.

Check out this site to see how a cat's leg is formed - http://www.specificbreeds.com/html/skeleton.html

Bad pics, but good description here http://www.oricomtech.com/projects/leg-anat.htm#Cogs2

Hope this helped!

Don't panic!
What you are seeing is the dewclaw. It's perfectly normal. Here's a link to read:

You know, at this point is is probably wise to take kitty to her doctor. You don't want her to have anything that would cause her to suffer, so do her a favor and have her checked out., ok???

I think you should take her to the vet and let them diagnose it. It might be nothing serious but if it is early treatment could be important.

Best of luck.
