I would say ... Hey you in there, are you alright? They will either open up to you or not. If you think it is something really bad, then you need to report it to the store or rest area people that you are concerned.

Never ignore it!! What if (God forbid) something was going on in there? I actually got cold when I heard the response above about "mind your own business" -- my response would have been "Fine, I'll go get the police!!" If that was your child would you want it to be 'permitted' and/or ignored?? Good God, at least ask if they are alright. As an adult you can tell if there is fear/pain in their voices and most kids will open up to a concerned adult.

If it could be a boy or girl...go check the door and make sure your in the correct bathroom. Second, ask if they are ok. Third, alert an employee or someone affiliated with that restroom. Let them know there may be a problem in there (assuming you do not get are response from the crier)

Ask if they are ok. Ask if they know where their grown up is. Find the grownup if they do. If they don't know, try to find out the grown-ups name (kids are usually taught not to tell strangers their names). See if the store can page the adult to the desk, but their needs to be away to make sure it is the right grownup. Get a security guard in other places.

Hey that happen to me!! I mean I was camping and I took my kids to the potty and I heard crying and I was looking around and I realized no one was with the little voice crying inside the porta potty. We asked him if he was ok and if he was stuck, well he was out of toilet paper and his parents didn't even now he was in there so we asked his name and found his parents close to our camp site, eye view of the potty. But he was in there for a long time. Poor kid..

here in the small town where i live, i know i can ask the kid through the door what is wrong without fear of a lawsuit. who knows, they might be crying because there is no paper and are too embarrased to ask. in my lifetime i have asked crying people what the problem is many times, only to be told to mind my own business once. we are all crew on this spaceship earth, and we all depend on each other. The christian thing to do is to always help others. Jesus never minded his own business.

ask them what is the matter? And then wait for the child to finish up his business and start looking for his/her parents and tell them that their child was crying and where were you!

I'll probably get a funny look but when it comes to the safety of children , i tend to get a little edgy!

I would try to talk to them and ask how they are feeling and be supported even if it was a stranger and I'll ask what happened and who they are with so they can confront them with the problem

First of all I would try to see what's wrong with that person, and if I can try and help I will.
