I haven't had a kitten in awhile so I don't remember. He poops several times a day even though I feed him Science Diet. Everytime I clean the box he goes AGAIN!! When will he stop? (We've been to the vet and everything is fine. I feed him the amount recommended on the bag)

Hi there...kittens digestive system is small and active so it's quite normal for them to poop 2-4 times a day. As they grow a little older and are not as active this will slow down to 1-2 times a day. Changing the food suddenly will actually irritate the digestive system causing diarrhoea and in some cats vomiting so it's important when considering the change be sure to do it gradually over a course of several weeks to minimize the bowel distress. For example...3/4 old food mixed with 1/4 new food for one week then the next week 1/2 to 1/2 then the next 1/4 old food to 3/4 new food for the third week and then the fourth week completing the change. Any vet can confirm these facts as well.

In regards to the smelly poop...many of the commercially available cat food products sold in supermarkets contain corn, corn meal which ferment as it broken down within the digestive system leading to very stinky poo. However, this also depends on the animal's genetics as well. Like humans, when two people eat the very same thing one person's business may stink to high heaven moreso than another (we can't compare our own poo since we'd obviously be biased.) I have two cats who's genetic makeup are quite different from one another (F1 Bengal --1/2 wild & 1/2 domestic -- and Abyssinian). They both eat the same identical high premium quality foods yet the Bengal's poo is so strong it would make a good substitute for chloroform, where the Aby's isn't so bad and is very tolerable.

Some of the high protein cat foods (which contains no corn based products or byproducts) found only at specialty pet stores such as Innova EVO, Life's Abundance, Nature's Variety Prairie may help minimize the stinky calling cards, but again it truly depends on the cat's genetic makeup. They are quite expensive compared to the supermarket brands, but if your intended goal is to lower the overall gas chamber effect you may need to experiment which works best.

[edit] Most of these products can be found at specialty pet food stores or purchased online as well.

Try a different cat food. Some foods create more waste than others by how well your cat digests it. I feed Purina, and haven't had any problems. If you do change the food, do it slowly, over at least a weeks time where you mix the old and new food, adding more and more of the new food each day to prevent diarrhea.
Also, what kind of litter do you use? I use Tidy Cat (red lid) clumping litter, and it cuts down on the smells from the box. I also clean the box at least once a day. I'm anal about a clean litterbox.

I will assume it is Science Diet kitten food (adult food is just as bad). The first three ingredients in it are (1) by-product meat (chemically treated meat considered unfit for human consumption; (2) whole corn; (3) corn gluten meal. You are paying $2.09 per lb. for this terrible food. All that corn is minimally digestible by a cat and the meat is trash.

For $1.50 per lb you can get Solid Gold Katzen Flocken, $1.66 for Natural Balance, $2.10 for Felidae. I don't have a price on Eagle Pack which is also an excellent food. All these foods use "human-grade" meat that is not chemically treated and fillers such as brown rice, millet, barley, oats etc. These are the third ingredient in the foods by weight. The first two ingredients are quality meat. So you are getting two-thirds high quality meat and one-third filler in these foods. With the Science Diet you are getting one-third meat (and poor quality contaminated meat) and two-thirds corn.

Using better quality foods will lessen the amount of poop significantly. Cats are carnivores and need meat in their diet so his body will be better nourished and there will be less waste in his box.

That's what kittens do, eat and poop. Get yourself a scoop and scoop it into the toilet and flush it away. Put baking soda in the bottom of the litter box and use clumping litter, it's not the poop that smells that bad, its the cat urine that stinks to high heaven,
Therefore scooping every day is essential.
Good Luck

Just a function of your little kittie's metabolism and the small body. Just like a human baby -- what goes down is displacing something in the tummy that must go out.

For the smell and kitten accident clean-up, try using a new product - Urine-Off Wipes for Cats & Kittens -- great for pee and poop accidents -- wiping away odors immediately. (http://www.urineoff.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=PT6100)

Change the food maybe it doesn't agree with him, and the going the second you clean it will always happen. I have 3 and 2 of them will come and watch you clean the pan and will hop in when you get done even if they just went. Sometimes they won't let you finish all the way, I think it is just they want it to smell how they want it to.

He is probably holding it in until his box is clean. They, like humans, will not go in a "toilet that is not flushed" if you know what I mean. Try cleaning the litterbox 2 to 3 times a day.. It has nothing to do with the food.

because all the smells intertwine when they cook and smell good. it's not hard to make food smell good. it's harder to make food taste good. my neighbors are full chinese i believe doubt they came from America but their house is a total pig sty. theirs crap they bring home from work all over their front yard and back yard and it's all broken things like tables, fridge, washing machines,etc.. but from time to time when they are cooking it smells really good. but i highly doubt it tastes that good. why? just walk infront of their door step and you will understand why theirs craps everywhere including dead plants/animals decaying like fish. Im sure they don't shop at a real grocery store either but the local china town and everyone in my state knows the china town isn;t very good for groceries as it's been known to carry rats and it isn't even that tasty. that being said don't let the smells fool you.

My mom changed the food she was feeding her cats because their poop smelled so bad, and was so often. I actually think it was the same food as yours. Canned food makes them poop alot and it is very soft and stinky! Maybe gradually try and switch their food. Our cats have lived long healthy lives on dry food only.
