My boy went from me to bottle to sippy cup, now hes on straws.
May be a social thing at this point, unacceptable at 5 (not saying I agree with it)
I'd say she probably enjoys the suckling and it's not a spill problem as much as it is a comfort thing, and I would not take it away . My son's eyes go all soft and sweet when hes drinking from his straw, he looks peacefull. Try straws, they do the same and are enjoyable but don't cause dental problems. Also, they are available everywhere, except the zoo, they don't give them out there for some reason .

I think that you can help her switch from sippy to a cup. But yes i think she is too old for a sippy cup. My daughter is almost 2 1/2 and she has been drinking out of cup since she was 18 months and she prefers her cup over a sippy

My daughter is 4 and she still uses a sippy cup. It saves the carpet. Who cares if your father does not agree with it. If he has such strong feelings about it, let her use an open top cup at his house only, let him clean the spills, and replace some carpeting and see if he still gripes on the subject. Your Nieces parents will do what they believe the child is ready for. When they feel like she is careful enough to use an open top cup, then and only then will she use one. Until then, a sippy cup is just fine as long as she is getting enough to drink during the day

5 is not too old for a sippy cup if the child does know how to drink from a regular cup. Sippy cups are great for preventing spills. As long as the child is capable of drinking from a regular cup I would not worry.

I don't think there is anything wrong w/a sippy cup as long as they supply the sippy cup and/or the child knows that certain places won't have her sippy cup.
I've actually read that infants can drink from cups if you give it to them - my 5 month old can already take small sips from a glass.
It's amazing!

way to old after 3 they should know how to use a cup. My 27 month old uses a sippy cup around the house but at meal times he uses a regular cup at the table.

I have a five year old son. At home, he uses a regular cup but isn't allowed to take it out of the kitchen, it sits on the table or counter so he is able to get to it easily. I have the small water bottles (12 oz size) that I also use. He uses a sippy cup in the morning when we travel from home to the sitters to drink his juice or milk before school as he doesn't always finish it before we leave. If your niece can drink out of a regular cup, that is fine, but if she cannot, then there is a problem. My aunt's daughter was 8 before she got her to drink well out of a regular cup! So they should definately watch that.

I believe so, yes. Sippy cups can also be detremental to tooth development. If they are worried about her spilling the liquids, they should get her a cup that does not leak but has a straw. But she's going to have to learn how to drink from a regular cup at some point, and they don't do sippy cups in kindergarden.....

My five year old still uses a sippy cup sometimes. Not because she needs it, but because her grandpa bought it for her and she likes it. It's not going to hurt anything. As long as the child is able to drink out of a regular cup, I wouldn't think this is a problem.

I have a 3, 4, and 6 year old. None of them use a sippy cup. They sometimes get a water bottle cap to put of a juice bottle or soda bottle. I think 5 is a little old.
