Passports are not required for domestic flights. You only need sufficient id to prove you are the person on the ticket. It is advisable to take photo id given the tightening security. If in doubt, check with the airline.

I took my passport to ireland and I was told I did not really need it, I suppose photo ID is all you really need.

Depends on the airline - phone up and check, but a lot of them are asking for Passports - you should be ok as it is within the UK though.
