For most states, the top age/size requirement is 4 years old and 40 pounds. Some have stricter standards (6 years and 60 pounds) before a child can leave a carseat. The Traffic Safety Administration recommends that children be in a carseat until 6 and 60, and a booster until they reach 4 foot 9 inches. There is a great article in this months' Parents Magazine on the issue. Specific requirements for your state should be found on your state's DMV website.

4.9' is the magic number Havent you seen that commercial, anyways 4'9 is the height and some car seat fit to either 80lbs or 100lbs but keep in mind kids should be in the back seat till they are 15 being in the front seat decreases your safety by 40%. if the kid (or adult for that matter) is under 5'1 the air bags should be turned off they can (and have) kill anyone under 5'1

Depends where you live. Most states today require the child to weigh 80 lbs. or be 8 years old.

Depends where you live. BUT carseats are always safest so if he fits in one or a booster seat why wouldn't you use it?

In Ohio, it is four years old AND forty pounds. So, if your four year old weighs 30 pounds, they still need one. If your three year old is 45 pounds, they still need one.
That said, it is recommended til 80 pounds and four foot, nine inches tall.

Where I live, if they are under 48 inches they need a carseat. It might be different where you live though.
