I feel bad, they are so excited about getting all this candy, but
it's soooo much! I thought about trading it for sugarless gum,
or a live lizard, or ticket to the movies. can you help me think of
something they will go for, they are 7 and 10

They are not going to be very happy with you taking thier candy. I wouldn't take it all away from them--but maybe tell them to pick out their favorites (twenty or so each), so they can have one piece a day...and tell them they can trade the rest for whatever you think they would like most from what you listed (you probably know that better than we do)

When I was a kid, my school collected candy for kids who couldn't trick-or-treat (or they just told us that and it was a way for parents to get us to give up candy) so half went to that the next morning. Then, I got to take one piece in my lunch, 1 piece when I got home from school and have one for dessert for a week. After that, it got trashed. (geez, that was a ton of candy my mom let me eat for a week!)

I think you could OFFER a trade to your sons, but because you didn't give them this rule before they got all the candy, it's hard to break the news now and not seem like you're taking it away.
Maybe a choice, like 2 pieces for a week OR a new video game (or tickets to an event or something).

If there's something they really want, they'll most likely trade candy for that. A lizard sounds like a good idea. Just ask them what they really really want, and if you're ok with a suggestion they both agree on, say if they give you their candy, then you will give them that thing they want. Sugarless gum isn't a good idea, they won't really go for that. Kids want sweet stuff!

Yes, trade it for tickets to the movies. Sugarless gum isn't that much of treat really. Movies or something like bowling might be fun.

I had a friend who was one of five kids. Her parents had the kids keep a certain amount of candy "out" for the day and the rest went into the freezer to keep it fresh. They had to make a quick pick for the next day and the next...
This way they have their candy, but not all at once. I thought it made sense.

Keep it separate!

To take they're candy away, it'll have to be a good trade. Maybe a video game or a trip somewhere or even skip a day of school

I have 3 boys-now they are 8,6,and4-from day one, we picked thru the candy and I took the least desirable stuff to work and left it in a bowl in the break room. The rest is put in a sealed canister on the counter and is used as a reward for good behavior in school-except the chocolate-my husband gets rid of the chocolate the first night so they never miss it! sometimes i find halloween snickers hid in the headboard of our bed!

I'd have to say that you shouldn't trade.

YOU knew what happens on Hallowe'en and still let your kids go without telling them ahead of time that they couldn't keep their spoils.

Take it as a lesson to you and not them and be better prepared NEXT year.

If you INSIST on taking away some of the candy I would explain to them that YOU made a mistake and misjudged the amount of candy they would collect and would like their ideas on what they might like to trade you for.

If they like sports, you can trade it for tickets to a game. Basketball, football and hockey seasons are alive and well. You can also give them a free pass on a punishment. Boys their age are bound to mess up at some point and I am sure they will appreciate the reprieve.
