Genealogy is all about how each person came to be. Who made you (genetically), who are your ancestors, all of them. Each generation you go back, there are twice as many contributors. So, tracking back you family tree becomes a common way to look at this.

Records are the proof. Birth, Death, Marriage, Wills, etc. I think the movie Roots spured a lot of people into looking where they came from, then the internet made it easier.

It is suppoed to be about the gentle art of tracing family trees. For some reason 30% or so of the Q here are mildly or wildy miscategorized, so an innocent person reading the questions may get the wrong idea of what genealogy is all about.
