YES.

But note, AVI is a sort of general container for video files. An AVI can need any number of additional codecs (algorithm the multimedia is encoded in). You need the correct codecs to watch a video.

DivX is very popular codec family:

K-Lite Codec Pack. Contains tonnes of codecs:

GSpot is a awesome little program, a video analyzer. It will give you all sorts of info on an audio/video file, including exactly what video and audio codecs you need.

The extention avi is slowly becoming more and more redundant as there are now many types of video compression with that extention. If you right click ont he file and left click properties and then to to summery and advanced it will sometimes tell you the compression type. If its Xvid or Divx which are 2 of the most common avi types then it will not play in windows media player 11 or 10 without extra codecs installed. Codecs are small files that enable your computre to read the corresponding video or audio type.
www.divx.com free player should beable to play these 2 file formates. Be aware, when you install this it will ask if you want the player or just the codecs. The player is simply another interface, if you are fond of the windows media interface (its look) then you should just install the codecs, it will work in WMP after you do this.

pondering AVI - audio/video interleaved - is the format progressed by potential of Microsoft for enjoying video, i come across it unusual that Media participant won't play them. I have no adventure with 11, yet have heard detrimental issues approximately it. possibly you ought to attempt reinstalling. in case you have the different utility like RealPlayer, see if it performs them. i think of 10 is quite cool, can we somewhat want something greater suitable than that?
