A rar file is a type of compressed archive, simiilar to zip files. To use them the most famous program is called winrar with is at the winrar.com website and its as free as winzip.
Rar files tend to contain 1 or more compressed files that must be cecompressed and extracted onto your hard dive before useing them. Its a very common way to compress files due to the cost being a lot lower than winzip for zip files.
