Yes it is better than Windows....mostly
You can try Fedora (Red Hat's community based project) by using the Live CD, others include Ubuntu and OpenSuse. ubuntu and OpenSuse are both really nice operating systems, and each have their own strengths and weaknesses, just like Windows. BUT these are free operating systems, so support usually meanss sifting through forums (or using yahoo answers). What's great is you can download the CD image, boot it, and try before you install it.
They'll run a little slow from the CD, but you can get the experience of having it on your hard drive, with out it actually being on your hard drive. Install is as simple as a few mouse clicks once the live cd has fully booted. Good luck, and don't let linux scare you, if you haven't tried it out before, you're in for a suprise, you can do everything you can on a windows box, but have a more reliable, more robust operating system.

Red Hat is no longer available for free download. Instead they launched a project called Fedora Core, an OS based on Red Hat which is free!
It's a Linux dsitribution (and of course not the only one... there are many others like suse, ubuntu, mandriva, mepis, slackware...) and if you haven't used Linux before I wouldn't recommend starting with fedora... Linux is different then windows and when it comes to being more stable Linux is better. If considering the compatibility issues, not all companies develop applications for linux...
As I said Fedora isn't the right decision if you're just starting with Linux... Even if it's very stable and it includes several paclages you still need to know how to manually configure some... It takes getting used to.. Take a look at opensuse, ubuntu (and derivates), mepis, knopix before using fedora...

Red Hat is not free anymore. You would need to get Fedora if you want a Red Hat version. There are other versions that are equally as good such as Suse, Mandravia, Ubuntu, etc.
If you are a Windows users and have been for a long time, then Linux will be a learning curve for you.

Fedora Core is the free version of Redhat. It's a very popular Linux Distro. It's considered the one to go with if you want to develop programs for Linux, but perhaps not a perfect replacement OS for regular Windows users. However, if you are serious about Linux, it's a great one to learn with.

Red had linux, as such, is more for companies. They have a more personal edition called Fedora Linux (http://fedora.redhat.com/).
Linux is a very powerful operating system, but it's more difficult to use than Windows. It is better for certain things, though for general computing, I wouldn't recommend it.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend downloading a copy of Knoppix. It's a member of the Linux family. Knoppix all fits on one CD, and runs from your CD-ROM drive, without installing anything to your hard drive. That way, you can try Linux without going through the commitment of installing it to your hard drive.
