No, not proper. If people want to converse others should be quiet and that wouldn't be the case if someone was humming or singing. The attention would be focused on that person the whole time and that is rude.

i assume you are talking about the family dinner table in your own home. is it proper etiquette NO. i have 6 daughters and 9 grand children and we sing, play , laugh, even had a roll or two tossed across the table. as long as you all set down and enjoy each other around the dinner table then who cares about proper etiquette.now with that said if your out to dinner or having dinner at some one Else's home that's the time for proper etiquette.

Not unless it's " Happy Birthday." I think the reasoning for not doing it is that it implies that your tablemates are poor company and you need to amuse yourself in other ways. Humming and singing are not substitutes for good conversation.

very rude!!! never do that. its like chewing with your mouth open or talking while you have food in your mouth.
bad manners to wear a hat, put your elbows in the table or eat on top of the plate instead of your hand bringing the food to you.

If your eating with others then I don't think that would be very nice. If your alone and want the sound of your own voice for company then by all means go for it.

Hello:
That depends on the family. We usually had free-for-alls at mine. We sang, giggled, joked, and fooled around. BUT when we went out for formal dining, we did not do any of those things.
Good luck.

No. It's rude and annoying. (My nephew says "nmmm, nmmm, nmmm" as he chews and it drives me nuts. And he's not a baby any more; he's 8. I don't know why his parents have not put a stop to it. Guess they think it's cute.)
