Yorkies bark. They can also be protective and somewhat aggressive. It's a breed trait. If it's problem, that really should have been worked out before you got him.
You can try some gentle training techniques to see if it can help, but remember, you can't supercede instinct. Train your dog to sit. Even with distraction, inside the home or in your yard, teach him to sit on command. Then, start going on short walks. When he barks, tell him to sit and try to face him the other way and to block his view of the other dog. If he does it and only gives a few barks, give him a treat. Gradually make the walks longer and longer.
If nothing else works, buy a 'muzzle' type appliance. A cage that fits over the snout would be perfect. This way he can bark until he turns blue, but he will never be a real threat to another dog. DO NOT purchase choke collars, shock collars, or anything else like that. They are cruel substitutes for training for irresponsible dog owners. Instead, use rewards over punishment. Punishment can increase aggression and scare dogs into fearing you.
Good luck to you! : )

I think your dog needs more socialization, both towards other people and other dogs. His barking could be either one, he is trying to be dominant, two he doesn't know how to react thus he barks and three, he is frustrated because he wants to play with other dogs but if you, the owner is scared keep pulling on his leash and he can't get near other dogs. Some dogs bark a lot but the moment they get near to other dogs, they start to play. It might be a bark of an invitation to play rather than being aggressive. You have to determine which is it and start socializing him with a very stable and mellow dog that you can trust; this is important. Let your dog near him and SLACK the leash. If you are worried, he will pick that up from you and thus tend to want to protect you. Just relax and control your breathing and try to sound cheery. It will be fine. Start now because a 1 year old dog is easy to train. When you overcome this, you will find it so much more pleasant to bring him out for walks and thus will bring him out for more walks simply because you enjoy it. And Yorkies are very easy to train.
Another method is train your dog to speak and be quiet. Look online for methods of training and practice at home when all is quiet and calm. When he knows it, bring him out and try to get him to be quiet when he is out or sit if he creates too much of a scene.

He needs to be socialized with other dogs and people. Try using a muzzle to keep him from biting. When walking him, don't stop walking when he starts barking. Just keep walking with him. He will put up resistance, but keep walking. Eventually, he will learn to "move on". Take him to a dog obedience trainer. They can teach you how to keep him under control and socialize him. Good Luck to you.

Your problem is that your dog has never been properly trained. That is not to say it is your fault. How you treat your dog and your expectations of him at home are no different than raising a child. He does not know what is expected of him in or out of the house and it is up to you to show him and give him confidence. I have had a number of dogs in my lifetime and I know it works. Go to the library or check it out on-line. There is lots of info out there to help you. Good Luck!!

I think it's a bad idea to have just one dog, that way he has another dog to play with. (by the way dogs play ruff and sometimes hurt themselves) I have two terriers. one mixed with black lab (11 years), and one mixed with poodle (1 year). I got to say that all dogs bark at each other, but during a walk, hmmmm. I sugest picking him up when he does it, and tell him he is bad, it might work. or you can walk him were there aint a lot of people, I perfer to walk mine around where I live. but yeah, just pick him up when he barks at other dogs and tell him he is bad and say no when you walk by other dogs, also I'd recomend bringing treats with for when he does'nt bark at other dogs, or you can use the treat to distract him. If my dogs did something bad I would show them the treat and I'd say "You see this, I was going to give you this but since you (did whatever they did) you aint going to get it." It worked well with me, maybe because terriers are very smart.

Try a muzzle for a while....or perhaps take a muzzle on the walk and the minute he starts barking put it on. Reward him when he doesn't bark. Eventually he will get the point.

he is probably being protetive of you and would'nt actually bite anyone. I bet if another dog got within 1 foot of him he would run away crying. You should feel glad he loves you like that. If it truely bothers you get a bark collar. It doesn't shock or anything like that it just makes a high pitch noise that gets louder untill he stops. Good luck. I say dogs like this have small man complex and they think they are big!!!!!!!!!!!111

Your dog has dog aggression......he thinks that he is king and trys to make all other dogs be submissive, there is a god chance that he may bite another dog and possibly a human.......Some obedience training will probably work wonders.....good luck

"Acceptance" gives you very good advice. I'll also recommend that you get the book Feisty Fido by Patricia McConnell. It has detailed steps to follow to help your dog be calm around other dogs. We give it to the students in our class for dogs who are aggressive/reactive to other dogs and the students love it.
