The best answer that I can give you is DO NOT BUY CLUBS as a gift.!!!!
I know thats not the answer you want but I promise it is the best.
Buying clubs without knowing the golfer's abilities or preferences is like buying clothes for a teenager. It would be a guess if you got the right set.
The best advice is to get a GIFT card or to buy a golf-fitting session so a pro can determine the best set for that specific golfer.
You can spend up to $1500 for a good set of clubs but that does not mean you spent your money wisely.
You might be better off buying a $500 set and $1000 in lessons!

I think it kind of depends on the golfer. My brother, a golfer, just decided to buy our father a gift certificate, and I can see why. Last Xmas, my father, now retired and an avid golfer, went to a golf warehouse, tried out 10 different types of clubs, looked at 10 different types of bags, and left with nothing, claiming that none of them "felt right"
if you do get anything, make sure that it has a return or exchange policy, because I would guess that it's like shoes, clothes and anything else - usable sure, but does it fit "just right"? only the user knows

for the most bang for the buck, I would go with the Cobras... you can get a full set for under a grand... if you don't mind coughing up a bit more, go for the Taylormade OS2... match that with a r5 dual driver and steel fairways... should set you back about a grand even... also check the internet... especially ebay!!!! sometimes you can get real lucky... I picked up a the new r7 driver that someone won as an outing door prize for $100... new! retails for $400... good luck and stay outa the sand...

I advise against trying to buy a whole set for someone. Everyone's swing is different and so there are different clubs to fit different needs (one example...steel vs. graphite shafts). I agree with some others who suggest the gift certificate for clubs. Give them a card that says "Good for one trip to Dick's Sporting Goods (or wherever you prefer) for a set of golf clubs" and go with them while they pick them out. :0)

I would not actual buy clubs, each person has there own feel for different types of clubs. I suggest you decide the amount you want to give and put that in gift card for say, golf galaxy. They also do fitting and sizing.

this is fantastic. he will savour this to the Nth degree. there is no longer a sort this is extra appropriate to lefties. i'm assuming he's not scrawny so steel will do in basic terms fantastic for the shafts interior the irons. for my area, i'm keen on Nike(my motto is, "In Nike I have faith"), yet i've got performed Mizuno until now and the others you pronounced are precise notch besides. Now to the undesirable information. Irons(golfing kit many times) are this style of private determination which you're extra desirable off in basic terms getting him a present day certificates. the setting up is important, yet reckoning on his measurements, he could be waiting to purchase off the rack. i can, yet i'm 5'7" one hundred seventy lbs. you need to take him to the save and watch his eyes illuminate once you tell him you have saved seven-hundred dollars to get him some irons. have faith me he's going to like it, yet he desires to circulate alongside for the experience so as that this is a very precious purchase and that your money went to remarkable use. Then all and sundry in touch would be satisfied.

I would not buy golf clubs as a gift for someone unless they tell you specifically what they want. My husband golfs a lot and I wouldn't dream of trying to pick anything out for him - he's really picky.
I know a girl who was trying to be nice and bought her boyfriend a set of golf clubs for Christmas one year thinking she was getting him the perfect gift. It turns out she bought him a right handed set and he was actually left handed and, on top of that, they weren't even what he wanted.

I would look at Callaway big bertha irons (x-18 is a great model) and the new cleveland Hi-Bore woods (driver, 3 and 5 woods). He will love them.
