Batteries are recycled, this why you trade your old one for a new one. If, you not have an old battery to trade you pay extra.

I'm not sure exactly how long batteries last, but they are said to last for the average lifetime of a car at least. If it helps, I've seen the warranties quoted as 7-8 years.

One would hope there is an effective method for recycling the heavy metals, but it would be difficult.

They say the batteries are suppose to last the lifetime of the vehicle, but then the warranty is good for 8 years or less which means that is how long they will really last. I heard that they will be very expensive to replace like 10,000 dollars. But no one knows for sure.
