This is all to do with reaction times.

What happens when you’re running around with your friends - perhaps playing netball? You’re supposed to mark someone so that they don’t catch the ball. You do that by keeping your eye on them and reacting when they change direction or speed. We’re not very good at it compared to other animals - we’re quite slow so it can be easy to lose the person marking you. Our reaction times are quite slow.

Birds reaction times, however, are much faster. A bird can react within a split second to the bird next to it changing direction and follow it. If you have a flock of birds all keeping a close eye on the birds next to it, the whole flock can appear to change direction instantaneously because they’re all reacting so quickly.

But if you took a video of a flock of birds flying and slowed it right down (like they slow down films of athletes running) you’d see they it wasn’t instantaneous. There is a delay between one bird moving and the next one copying it.

So birds avoid bumping into each other by having very fast reaction times. Clever stuff.

The same reason people don't bump into each other when they are walking. In-built radar.
