I have a tattoo of a butterfly on my hip, and yes, to be honest it did hurt quite a lot. However, it's quite small and did not take too long to do, and the other good thing is that as soon as it is finished it stops hurting, the pain doesn't stay.
The black outline hurts the most, the 'colouring in' is less painful.
I would place it on a 'pain scale' like this (from 1-10, 10 being the worst pain)
Getting my ears pierced - 2
Getting my belly-button pierced - 4
Tattoo - 8 and a half

I am really glad that I had mine done, but I don't think I would do it again.

I have 13 tattoos, both large (my whole hip) and small. Yes, no matter what anyone else tells you, there is some degree of pain involved. The hip area isn't a particularly painful place, but if you have any stretch marks you can expect the pain to be greater in that area. If it's on the stomach portion of the hip, at the front, it will be more painful than on the side, at least that was my experience. You can buy something called Emla cream, which is a topical anaesthetic that's used before kids get injections to numb the skin, but PLEASE check with your artist first, as some are reluctant to tattoo over an area that's not scrupulously clean. If you don't ask first you may get turned away.

As for myself, I just concentrate on my breathing. If it gets really painful I imagine that I pick one spot on the wall and stare at it and concentrate. I've also brought a book with me and that seemed to work, but not as well as the breathing exercises.

Good luck!

Hello, Tattoo really are not bad at all i have many of them..What the pain feels like is. when the machine is tattooing you it kinda has a burning sensation and that about it as soon as the machine stops the pain stops. I my self have my hole leg done my back and the inside of my lip and really i think on your hip you will be fine.. Be strong if you want it done then you need to deal with what comes along with it right.. Do not drink or do drugs be for you go you will bleed bad witch will result in colour loss Witch means touch ups.. and more pain for you. Take some iron supplements and Vitim C the night be for and you will be great and come out with a wonderful tattoo

I was totally the same as you. I was so worried about the pain I cancelled my appointment twice. The third time I wasn't going to let fear take hold again, ha ha.
I got a butterfly on my shoulder. Ouch yeah it hurt but the pains bearable my tattoo is quite small it took about ten mins to do, it was totally worth it. The pains not as bad as you think.

Since I had my butterfly I've been back and had a flower with a butterfly over it just above my ankle, that didn't even hurt as much as my shoulder. Don't worry about it. I'm so happy with mine Its a fuss about nothing. The pain is like someone is scratching you hard on your skin. If you do get your tattoo the best cream by far is Savlon works wonders. Heals super fast.

Think about this - why do you want the tattoo? Is it because it's cool and you think it'll look pretty? Or is this something meaningful to you? If it's the first, then you deserve the pain. If it's for the second, then the pain is part of ritual. And yes, it is a ritual - an experience for both your body and your mind. Think about your tattoo during the process to help think beyond your pain.

And above all - BREATHE! Your body tempature will rise as you continue and, depending on how long of a session, you may feel a bit dizzy and light headed.

Hope you're not doing this to be another trendy idiot...

I have a tattoo on my low back and the middle didnt hurt at all but the sides of the tattoo close to my hip hurt like hell. I would imagine the hip would hurt. Ideas on how not to feel pain? Good luck

the more fleshy the area the more it will hurt
i have quite a few as i am really into tattoos, i have one on my hip, it is a small heart (don't ask) it did hurt but only lasted 5 minutes. i have a big one on my back that took a total of 5 sittings. tyhe outline is like a cat scrach, kind of burns. the colouring is like a sharp tickle. if you are only having a small one there isn't really much to worry about. it will be over before you know it. if its what you really want then the pain will be worth it!!
just make sure that the tattooist is licensed and clean

If you convince yourself it is going to hurt, then it is probably going to hurt. YOu may surprise yourself too, and find that you can actually handle the pain. I thought I couldn't handle it, but then had one of the most painful areas done and only winced a couple of times.

Some people talk alot to take their minds of the pain, others - like me - tend to think of somewhere else.

All in all you should not get a tattoo done unless you are 100% positive it is something you want.

It all depends on your pain threshold. Boney areas tend to hurt more because there is less "fat". For me, my experience has been that it is a different type of pain. More like an irritating slight pain. Like a razor cutting the skin. I have a few larger tattoos and noticed after a bit the skin will actually feel numb and you do not feel it as much. I also noticed it all depends on the quality of the tattoo artist you have chosen. Good Luck.

Okay the answer to this question, is .....tattoos are supposed to cause some pain, if not every freaking person would have one. When I went to get my very first tattoo that is what my artist told me. Then what would be the fun of having a tattoo if you were too chicken to with stand a little temporary pain to have something so beautiful and meaningful....You can deal with it. If not a tattoo is not mean for you!!!
