Why would an evil person want us to gain knowledge of good and evil and yet the “good” person wants to keep us from it?

The good person punished us for gaining that knowledge, yet the evil person helped us gain it. If you reverse the use of the words good and evil, then it makes more sense:

The good person helped us gain knowledge of ‘good and evil’ and the Evil person punished us for it.

Any thoughts?

I think it stems from the fact that imperfect creatures, who were made in the likeness of another imperfect being, gaining the same knowledge of that imperfect being. Therefore, all of existence is flawed.

It makes sense for an evil person to make us gain knowledge of good and evil, IF that evil person gets the chance to call HIMSELF good, and the others, evil. In this world, the one who states the truth first, gets to put it in their own terms and in a way that's convenient for them.

The matter hinges on deception. The evil one first queried the word of God. 'Did God really say...?' The woman wondered, then repeated God's word but misquoted. She omitted two words, added 'neither shall you touch it', then substituted the words 'lest you die' for 'thou shalt surely die'. Thus was born the first 'revised version' of the word of God! This is the evil one's paradigm through the centuries - distort what God has actually said, so making him out to be unfair, cruel and a despot (which is what the deceiver is.)

When the evil one tried to tempt Jesus he used the same trick of mis-quoting, but Jesus was more than a match for him because he knew exactly what God's word said. Hope these few thoughts help you. They will, if the question was sincerely asked.

Evil is often easier to choose, the temptation and the lure can sometimes be overwhelming. We all have our weaknesses,
such as illicit sexual pleasures and other vices. A good person wouldn't want that for us but an evil one would enjoy the company. A good person would keep us from it where a bad person would invite it . Therefore your original statement holds true rather than the latter.

The knowledge of good and evil was to be taught by God himself, not by experience. Disobedience short circuited the teaching process, but God's grace was already working towards reconciliation in the blood sacrifice for animal skins to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve.
Because satan deceived them into following him, they became his slaves.

Knowledge is not wisdom. Wisdom is godly use of knowledge. Punishment was for disobedience. The master plan was already ready to be revealed four thousand years later: The Word became flesh and dwelled among us.

In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He was in the beginning with God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

I assume you are referring to what happened in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve. I believe God wanted us just to be innocent and be happy without worries and painful knowledge of life. It's the knowledge that we have that make us judge others and come out with sneaky thoughts that usually get us into trouble. Children are adorable to many because they are still innocent and lack evil thought like adults to. So all God wanted was for us to stay innocent and playful. It's obvious God is very strict on loyalty.

The "GOOD" person being GOD, didn't want us to receive knowledge of good and evil because it would then make us impure. When humans were created, they were without sin and pure, receiving that knowledge made us able to sin and be sinners. Don't fool yourself, you have been tricked just like Eve was when Satan told her it was good that she would have the knowledge and she would be as a god. It got her misery instead. The Devil wants you to believe that it was a good thing he did by helping that come about, but it is not, because now there is sin, pain, suffering, disease, war, should I keep going?

I agree with an earlier person about twisting the words.

It wasn't a situation where God was trying to keep us from the knowledge of good and evil, it was an example of obedience.

God told them not to eat of the fruit on the tree, and they did. They disobeyed God. That's the bottom line!
