Northwest's hub is in Minneapolis, so you may be able to get a cheap flight with them. Note that you can fly into Reagan National (DCA), Dulles (IAD), or Baltimore (BWI), so get the best airfare by checking all three. You can easily get to any of them with mass transit from DC, though Dulles is the most difficult. BWI tends to be the cheapest. Take the MARC train from BWI, or if it's on a weekend, a shuttle bus runs directly from BWI airport to the Greenbelt Station on the Metro. Check http://wwwm.wmata.com for more information and timetables.
If Air Tran flies to MN, check the costs on their web site (to BWI). They frequently have sales, and their web site is very user-friendly.
