I have had thyroid surgury, and I had no complications. I only had my right side removed. Afterwards, I have NOT had to be only any meds. because my left side is pulling the weight of both sides. So it is possible she will not have to take meds. I have to get it checked every 6 months. I went home the day after my surgury, and in a few weeks I was perfectly fine. My throat was really sore and it was hard to eat for a few days. But it was not that bad. I slept the thru the first 2 days I was home, then I was moving aroung just fine. They put in disolvable stiches, i didn't have to have anything taken out. And I never had a weight issue with it either, i still weight 115 like i always have.

P.S. Sneezing was very painful for a few weeks- so if she has allergy problems you may want to keep her some allergy medicine around.

I have my whole thyroid taken out because of thyroid cancer. I had never been put to sleep before and had never been in that kind of situation before.

Once the surgery was over it was not so bad. The first day after surgery I felt bad. I was exhausted. I had bombs (to collect blood) hanging out of my throat. They took them out the next day when I was released to go home.

Once I was home it was okay. Just make sure she takes it easy and does as little as possible for a while.

Depending on whether or not they take all of it she will have to be put on medication.

One thing I learned from my Oncologist was that the body knows you have a thyroid, your brain does not. There fore the medication you take for thyroid can only do so much. Weight gain is inevitable in most. But once you adjust after a couple of years of controlling your medication you can start to work harder on getting the weight off.

Without the function of your thyrpid you feel tired, cranky and want to sleep a lot.

My mom had it, my friend had it. she'll be sore for a couple of days, maybe loose her voice, but she will have to be on meds for the rest of her life and she can't flake because it's dangerous....she'll be fine tho it's simpler than it used to be
