I have a 5 year old Blue and Gold macaw named Jack... He has a black tongue and a black beak and underneath his tongue isn't black... I've never really looked at it before but today he was staring at me with his tongue raised and the light was shining right on it, and I looked at it and it's white and has little black dots. Is that normal? He's not acting differently than he always has, and he's as healthy as he's ever been, I've just never noticed it before and when I searched the internet I couldn't find pictures of bird tongue. I can't get a picture of his either because he tries to bite the camera. Thanks, I know it's a stupid question I'm just slightly concerned and curious.

Well, it sounds like a normal colored tongue. But the white colors and black bumps are of interest to me. It might be wise to take me to a vet if he starts to acts a little off. I would love to see a picture of the tongue if you could get one.

Yep, like the others it sounds normal to me, too. The underside of our macaw's tongue is sort of pink with black dots. If, however, the bumps are raised (not just color spots) then you might want to go to the vet to be sure.

Sounds normal to me. Many macaws have lighter undersides to their tongues. Some species even have striped tongues!

The situation with this bird is a difficult one that will take someone with experience and knowledge holding your hand every step of the way. It is a common problem and most qualified parrot behavioral consultant can help you. I suggest that you go to the IAABC (Intentional Association of Animal Behavioral Consultants) website and find a certified or associate parrot behavioral consultant to work with. They are not plentiful and you may not find one in your state. However, they do work by telephone and video.
