Free range is better as the hens are fed on better diets and are healthier in general and they arent cooped up as much as factory farmed hens which results in better quality eggs. There is some research which suggests that they contain higher levels of nutrients (mens health mag i nicked off boyfriend) I aways buy free range as i cant bear the thought of helping to sustain the market of factory farming for animal cruelty reasons.

Well first off they taste better and are fresher. My dad has 55 chickens and more egggs than we can handle. If you have the room in your yard i would highly suggest buyin a chicken or 2 of full maturity. you probably will not need more than the eggs they provide and the great thing is that the eggs will last about a month on your kitchen counter, longer in the fridge. Super market eggs are usually about a month old when you buy them. If having your own chickens is not an option for you i would suggest buying them from a local farm. It will be benificial to your helth and you will notice the fresh taste difference right away.
Also, if you do decide to buy a few chickens don't wash the eggs until you are ready to use them, they will keep longer this way. And, if you are unsure about if they are good put them in a deep bowl or empty coffee can, the bad eggs will float.

Chickens need a stress free environment to thrive and the chickens health is passed on into the eggs. Look at a "Barn" egg the shell is papaer thin and the yolk in pale yellow, now look at a free range the shell is thicker and the yolk is deeper yellow, it will taste better too. The reason being is that chickens are always on the go, they love to forage for tasty roots and bugs and this makes their diet more balanced and the chicken is more stress free. "Barn" egg chickens are kept in a shed with NO natural light on a perch less than the size of a sheet of papaer with no room ro move, they are stressed, fed rubbish and often kill each other out of pure boredom. The free range is so much better for your health and this is soley due to the health of the bird that layed it.

Free range eggs a healthier.. I know cause
I spend half my life on different farms that had chickens. I worked on these farms collecting eggs and cleaning chicken coupes! The free range eggs have a darker yolk and less watery than the chickens that are not free range. You
can take a couple eggs to any science class mark one A and Mark on B. Don't tell them which egg is free range and which isn't until after the test, They can analyze the eggs and tell you which is healthy. I know cause I done just that.. the free range egg did come out to be healthier! But I don't think they are worth a whole $1.00 difference in price! Maybe 50 cents more per carton but not a whole $1.00 I've seen reg. eggs at $2.19 a dozen and Free Range at $3.19. I get the cheaper ones of course! If the free range were $2.69 instead of $3.19 I would've got them!

Normally a free range egg will have a much richer yolk taste a lot better, but sadly we the public again can be hood winked.A lot of egg suppliers keep their hens is large sheds, the hen might get more exercise, but not a lot of fresh air and natural feeding. they will still be fed with pellets I wouldn't exactly call the free range. Better drive round the country an go into a farm and buy really fresh eggs and you should see the hens roaming about eating spilt corn, grubs, worms and every thing natural. Happy eating.

"Battery" chickens are kept in small coops and they loose all their neck feathers by sticking their heads through tiny bars to eat food. They look --- really bad.
"Free range" chickens are allowed to run around. They have all their feathers. They look better. My guess is they are happier, if their two lone functioning brain cells can actually register "happiness".
"Free range" does NOT also mean "organic" (without unnatural chemicals). So free range chickens are treated with antibiotics just like battery chickens. The difference is that free range chickens have access to more places to eat and scratch around, so they are more likely to have eggs containing salmonella.
Other than that, there should be no difference in the eggs.

Hi leon:
The only difference is you pay more!. There is no difference at all, it is just the way that they are bred and raised that people like. They say it more ethical to raise free-range chickens but the ones that say that also raise the price of their eggs. The chicken doesn't know if it's better to lay an egg after running around outside or sitting with it's pal's in a barn.
Also you have to remember that after the 40 days it doesn't matter what the chicken did before, it becomes dinner anyways.
Hope this helps

Free range chickens get more exersice. This is healthier for the chicken, developing more muscle and cutting back the fat. Theoretically, this lowers cholesterol and if the chicken is healthier, so would its eggs... I personally prefer the smaller eggs. I grew up on a farm, and never saw natural chickens produce jumbo eggs.

free range because the chickens are fed a healthier diet so the eggs will be better for you, they have a healthier lifestyle too. Cheap basic eggs come from chickens that have been cooped up in a tiny cage fed the crappiest food too.
