But I can only record Freeview channels if I leave the TV on. I can record analogue channels normally.

That would make perfect sense.

On the off-chance, you meant to actually ask a question like "why is this so" you may find the next bit useful :)

You can record analogue with the TV off or on because you have an analogue VCR/DVD recorder. So if the TV is off or no makes no difference. The analogue signal comes through fine

However - you NEED your TV on as it is has the digital decoder built in (not the VCR), if you switch it off, you switch off the decoder that provides the analogue/scart equivalent to whatever digital channel you are watching. As your VCR is depending on this output, if it goes off, you cannot record it.

options: VCR/dvd recorder with built int digital decoder OR a standalone decoder OR leave the TV on :)

Here's what you can do about it: I guess when your TV is off, the freeview goes off because the freeview component switches off when the television is off.
A way around it might be to put the TV into sleep mode or on standby - see if this works; if not, post more details.
By the way, I asssume your VCR or DVD recorder is separate from the TV?

Think of the VCR as a television without a screen. It is independent of the Television set that is why it is possible to watch one channel while also recording another. The VCR Must be tuned in to the stations you wish to record.

I guess your question is why?

Well, the Freeview receiver is part of the TV and clearly goes into standby along with the TV when you turn it off. Actually confirm that - Are you turning it OFF or putting it in stand-by ? If you are turning it off, try the latter.

Your video recorder has a built in tuner so it recordes from itself rather than the TV. Therefore it does not need the TV to be switched on

in case you want to list freeview out of your television as long as your television has an aux/scart out to deliver the freeview signal on your video.you should be high quality. playback will be high quality out of your dvd/video will be ok as this isn't affected.
