In home theater the sub woofer is the ".1" in either 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 in your home theater setup. This speaker is for the bass output on your stereo and can be utuilzed with either small or large front speakers. In new receivers the crossover in your receiver will allow you to set at what frequency the amount of bass is transferred over from your speakers to your sub woofer. There are two main types of subs and they are active and passive with the main difference being that one is powered by a separate amplifier using the LFE (or low frequency effect) channel on your receiver.

Hope this helps.

The "sub" does not refer to "Sub-audible"--that would mean it's just too quiet to hear. Frequencies that are below your hearing threshold are termed "Infrasonic", which is typically below 20hz (although everybody's a little different).--And only the best subwoofers can reproduce sounds that deep at levels you can actually feel.

However, yes a subwoofer is the speaker in the home theater or music system designed to reproduce bass. Technically, bass encompasses all frequencies below 80hz. To be considered a true subwoofer, it must be able to reproduce a reasonable level of output below 40hz (I'm not sure if there's any sort of specification behind that or if it's just a rule of thumb).

By the way, the ".1" designation refers to the fact the the subwoofer channel only handles a tenth of the audible frequency spectrum (20hz - 20,000hz) in terms of octaves.

A subwoofer is a particular kind of loudspeaker used either in a home theater/stereo system or in an automobile stereo system. The subwoofer specializes in reproducing (at great volumes, if you wish) the lowest bass frequencies. So what the subwoofer really does is produce the "big bass" that many people enjoy, particularly when the music is of the type where booming bass is part of the artists' desired effect.

Some of the post below are right on, it is also at least 8" in diameter, with the better speakers being 10" 12" even 15"
in diameter in a usually big square box and it handles frequencies
around and below 80hz. A low hmm....is an example...but lower.
the moving of the air mass...and size of speaker causes the low
thump....and its meant to reproduce the lows in music and movies.

the undertaking is that to get sufficient bass quantity from the 8-inch floor audio equipment, you will get a great sort of distortion. reckoning on what style of music you hear to, you will possibly be able to correctly be waiting to get by skill of without sub. in spite of the undeniable fact that, in case you hear to classical (surprisingly organ music) or some styles of rock, they are in a position to frequently produce tones decrease than 40Hz, and your floor audio equipment could have a difficulty with that. regardless of in case you do no longer hear to that style of music, a sub is mandatory to get the low-frequency outcomes from video clips. If this is your basically % for the sub, attempt to get one which you would be able to cut back to 60Hz, so as that the main properly known audio equipment carry most of the sound. by skill of how, the dimensions of the room makes no distinction on your skill to hearken to low notes, and smaller rooms (smaller than 0.5 the wavelength) are relatively extra desirable, because of the fact that they gained't have nodes. I relatively have heard 20Hz tones in very small rooms (hi-fi demo rooms).

The "sub" refers to sub-audible. While the driver does reproduce very low bass notes it also reproduces lower frequencies than you can hear. The frequencies you "feel" rather than hear! :-)=
