Do both of us have to either pick which country we want to retain citizenship of? Or do we acquire dual citizenship to both the US and Canada? I will be moving and working in the US with her. Am I even eligiable for US citizenship, or do I automatically recieve it upon marriage? I'm lost in these matters, any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I'm recieving responses like"you will automatically recieve american citizenship".. my question is, do I lose my canadian citizenship? And does my wife acquire candian citizenship also? So do we both become Dual American-Canadian citizens? I've also heard that upon marrying an American, a canadian recieves a Green Card, not automatic citizenship. Anyone with knowledge, please respond, thanks.

You will automatically get US citizenship, but you should not give up your Canadian citizenship.

you can have dual citizenship in the us. the patriot act hasn't gotten to that yet. It will be easier for your fiance to apply for canadian citizenship once she becomes your wife, but there's still an elongated process. Canada accepts immigrants based on how well they'd assilimate, if they speak english and french, if their job is needed in canada, how long they've been living in canada etc. It's a good idea to start up the dual citizenship for both of you because you might want to flee... er, return to canada in a few years if american begins to get on your nerves

I am a Canadian who lived in the U.S. for 5 years.

If you marry an American, you have to apply for permanent residency (Green Card). After you have had your Green Card for 5 years, you can apply for citizenship. If you become a U.S. citizen, they do not recognize your Canadian citizenship, but Canada does.

I don't know what happens if your fiance moves to Canada, but U.S. may revoke citizenship if she becomes Canadian. Look into this.

Neither of you will automatically acquire the other's citizenship upon marriage!!! I have no idea where some of the people giving you answers get these ideas; it's absolutely not true.

Both Canada and the US have provisions for immigration benefits based on marriage, but they have to be applied for, approved, and issued. And they do not include immediate citizenship.

If you are expecting to move to the US, here is what you need to know, and what she and you both have to do, either before or after marriage (your choice):

You would be eligible for American citizenship due to your marriage to a citizen..I am not sure how Canada goes but would assume your husband would become Canadian citizen for same reason..people are allowed to be citizens of 2 countries in most cases
