You might think it'll be more expensive in NY, but when you figure in all the trips to Chicago you'd probably have to make, the pricing may be a little more comparable.
The tradition is to have the wedding where the BRIDE is, so if you want to have your wedding in NY, have it there. I wouldn't expect a lot of your friends and family back home to come to it, but those that really want to be there (because they are happy for you and want to witness your nupitals) will be.
The only catch might be if your parents are footing the bill, they may insist on having it in Chicago, but if you're paying for it, any part of it, you should have it where YOU want it...it is after all, your day!

Forget tradition this is the new millenium. Yeah it would be practical for yo to plan the wedding where you live it would save you transportation cost. You could plan a wedding in Chicago if you wanted to. I know someone who got married a couple of weeks ago. She lived in NY/NJ and she had her wedding in Florida and it turned out spectacular.

It's not a lot harder to plan a wedding in a different city, and it will save a lot of money and ensure more of the family can come. In the end though, it's your wedding and you should decide what's best for you.

I would say start doing your homework. Try to find economical accomodations and flights so that the costs are not burdensome to your family. Perhaps look at places outside the city that would be cheaper. Then you can reassure your family that you are thinking of them during this process. They may still be disappointed, but it is YOUR day.
