Why do you assume that ALL Americans drink soda and cheap beer over wine? I don't. Many of my friends don't. Many Americans drink soda because it tastes good and that's what they were raised on. Many humans (all countries) drink cheap beer because it's all they can afford or because they fall victim to advertising. Why would Italians (in Italy) be proud to serve Heinekin when Birra Moretti and Peroni are so much better? Or when they could easily import Spaten, Paualner, Loewenbrau, or even Hofbrau from Germany?

As far as NoCal wines go, some are great and some are crap. Many are overpriced, resting on laurels won years and years ago (Opus One). Beringer White Zin is the number one selling wine because somewhere along the way they decided that women drink wine and they'd be more likely to drink a sweet pink cheap wine and it will make them feel sophisticated. Good NoCal wines are just fabulous and a real treat. But sifting through the rest is quite a chore.

why do you think that all Americans like cheap beers or soda? I don't drink much soda, and I love wine! My favourite is the Peisporter Gold from Germany. We have some good Missouri wines also, and I usually get them instead of California wines, support local businesses! But Napa Valley does have some good wines. As far as Cheap Beer, I usually drink Michelob Ultra, not so cheap, compard to other brands. And once in a while, I buy Labatt's Blue, imported from Canada, not cheap either.

IMO - It's all about exposure. In Europe Wine, and Beer are part of the culture. Much like Coke and Pepsi is here. I think if more people were exposed to good wine, and beer we would see a huge increase. Microbreweries are experiencing a huge growth right now due to the public being exposed to a variety of flavored beers. It also has to do with disposable income as well. $25 bucks for a bottle of wine might be a little much for the average family to enjoy with dinner.

I personally have just started tasting, and expanding my options when it comes to wine, and Beer!

Hopefully the average American will start to as well!

My favorite NorCal wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon--from the Alexander Valley. Be sure to check the label. Alexander Valley has volcanic ash from nearby Mt. Konocti, resulting in a very rich and full flavor.
As for beers?! If Americans drank beer with the same alcohol content as Europeans, they'd be in trouble. They drink beer like water. I wasn't raised on sodas and cheap beer, so I can't tell you the answer.

To your first question: preferences actually vary from one geographic area to another. (It probably would not surprise you to learn that the #1 market for per-capita wine consumption in the USA is San Francisco-Marin in California but I bet you couldn't guess that the 2nd is Burlington-St. Albans in northern Vermont. Both areas also have a large concentration of craft micro-breweries and brewpubs). To your second question: I have always felt that, as a general thing, the wines from the more northern appellations - Russian River Valley, Mendocino, Alexander Valley, Central Sonoma - are better and much better values than the more famous Napa Valley and Mayacamas.

I don't like wine. Cheap beer because you still get drunk and pee it all out anyway. If I am going to spend more money than usual I buy expensive Bourbon.

Wine existed previously your bible and your faith. many kinds of alcohol existed previously then. Rome made a ton of it, they even had a god which grew to become into the god OF wine, grapes, ecstasy, and grape harvesting pronounced as Bacchus, all this grew to become into interior the B.C. era.
