Why does my dog act agressive to some people? today my hesband had some carpet guys (3) come to our house to fix our carpet. They drove a van, and before they even got 1/2 way up our driveway, our fenced St. Bernard started barking and growling like he was going to try and eat the guys. When they got out of their vehicle, he was just plain mad and growling lowd enough for the guys to ask about their safty. The dog loves almost everone and everything. Why would he act like this now towards someone he has never even been around? Do you think he has a problem with the people, or was he just scared for my husband and my safty?

How long have you had the dog? Some dogs seem to have "issues" with certain types of people.

My uncle had a rott (a VERY neurotic rott!) who would FREAK OUT if someone wore glasses or a hat. To the point he was dangerous.

My cattle dog (a rescue dog) is very uneasy around men she doesn't know. She's fine with women and kids, but she barks viciously at men and paces and keeps a VERY close eye on them if they are allowed inside.

My point is... is it possible your dog was previously abused by someone? I know a lot of dogs have a problem with uniformed people, be it cops, repairmen, mailmen, etc. I think in some cases, they've been trained to be that way (by their previous drug dealing owners, etc), but in many cases it's bringing back memories of abuse and they react.

It may have been because there were people he didnt know at his house, and hes trying to look out for his family. Is he getting old? Sometimes when dogs get old then tend to act mroe and more mean.

He was trying to protect you. dogs have a sense about people that we don't, they can tell when people have a hostile attitude towards them or you and your family.
my dog has warned me more than once and she's been right more than wrong.

Animals have a much keener sense of discernment than humans. They can sense "bad" people and "good" people.

Dogs can sense if ppl like them or not, and if the ppl are ok or have bad intentions.
