Don't ship an animal in the cargo hold of any plane unless you absolutely have to. Cargo holds are not pressurized, and neither heated nor air conditioned. Most animals survive, some do not. If it all possible, call your animal carry-on and have it ride in the passenger area. JetBlue is usually pretty good about this.

United is fairly good about transporting animals. Just be aware there are certain times of the year they refuse to transport pets because of the heat.
