There are several varieties of "crabs"..some are harvested for their claws only, others for their legs and others for their body parts......
On the "east coast" ...we eat a lot of "Blue Crabs"...body & claws.....Except "soft shell crabs"..We eat the whole thing except the lungs and stomach....even the little legs.
.
Stone Crabs are harvested for their claws only...only one is removed and they are returned to the ocean where they regenerate another claw ...and harvested again.
Recycling at it's best!

"Some," not all people eat only the meat from the crab leg's because that is where majority of the meat is. In the bodies of the crab there is less meat, is what I have been told and while cracking open a crab myself in my lifetime there is more meat in crab leg's then the crab body itself.

That's not true. We ate tons of dungenes crab growing up and we always ate the meat out of the body. If you mean in restaurants, they usually break of the body in pieces with the leg, so you have a chunk of the body attached to the top of the leg. I doubt anyone throws away the meat from the body considering how much the crab cost.

The legs are easier to pull apart comapred to the body. Also the legs probably contain more scrumptious meat than the body itself. I love crab.

That is because most restaurants only offer the legs as a meal / appetizer...etc. When cooking them at home, we boil the entire crab and dig in to all parts of it.

The claws aren't bad either! I love crab legs and claws. It's often the cheapest way of buying them, rather than the whole one. And the shells are great for stock.

People do eat the meat from the bodies, where do you think the brown meat comes from.

Because the "rest of the Crab's body" is composed mainly of its lungs - which is poisoneous to people!

Crab legs and claws are muscle tissue, but the bodies are primarily organs. They can be (and often are) used in cooking, but eating organs makes a lot of people squeamish.
