Because some of the "have nots" wanted some of what the fat cats possessed, and the fight was on. Some of the stupid american politicians forgot the Monroe Doctrine of "No Foreign Involvement" and we shed blood in a foreign war. We did not learn from past experience so we are doomed to repeat it time and time again.

Some people have already answered, but I just have to point out how stupid some of these answers are. Communism? Not even around in 1914, Austria vs. Hungary? They were the same country!!!! It all started with autria and hungary going to war and then germany backed autria so they declared war on them, and then britian and france backed up hungary so they declared war on germany, but then america joined because they backed up britian
