Apostles - 12, Disciples more than 12. It is not a specified number. Disciple is like a student or a learner.
All the Apostles were disciples, but not all disciples are apostles.

A Disciple is a pupil. If you follow the teachings of Jesus Christ today and accept him as the promised Savior, you are a disciple of Christ.
The Apostles were 12 men that Jesus selected out of the Disciples to teach them directly and with the entention that after he had given himself on the cross and accended, these 12 men would be the ones to carry on and evangalize the messages of Jesus Christ.
He spent alot of time with them teaching them directly things that he knew they would need when he was accended.
Many scholars believe there were hundreds of Disciples that followed with Jesus as he traveled.

There are no specific numbers given in the Scriptures.
12 were very close to Jesus but many more followers / disciples.

Uncounted millions.
A disciple of Christ is simply a "learner" of Christianity.
He had 12 Apostles, then after Judas betrayed him, he gained two more.

How many ARE the disciples of Christ?
Too many to count, but still too many who aren't.

In the Bible it is mentioned that He sent out 72.
He kept 12 close to Him, 1 commited suicide and was replaced, but not till after Jesus had died physically.
From His ministry to date the numbers are countless.

I believe at the last supper, they reserved a table for a party of 13, but that would include the guest of honor.

there apparently were twelve, but then Judas commited suicide and was replaced by another man in the count of 12...so technically there were thirteen.
