Why is it considered rude to criticise religion as we do other beliefs (political, personal, etc.)? Some people become genuinely upset at the mere statement of "there is no god." Why do people tend to put themselves in harms way because of their religious beliefs? Why do people feel the need to hate or kill people who's religious beliefs are different from theirs. And most importantly why do people demand such ultimate respect for religion?
Religious beliefs are tantamount to personal opinion... and as such should be open to criticism.

I'm not talking about "bashing" I'm talking about Criticism. There is a vast difference.

Very good point Fourmorebeers... it is for that very reason that we should be extremely critical of religious claims.

Because at its heart there is no way to justify it. If you made a statement you would normally expect to be able to justify it by appealing to evidence, the religious cannot.

It's evolution.
Civilization has been dominated by socio-political religious organizations since the beginning of recorded time. One of the ways that society binds together is by ostracizing those that don't conform, and religion is a simple and obvious place to start - reference the high % of wars that have been fought over religious ideals.
From the Crusades, to the Salem Witch trials, to creationists trying to put stickers in biology textbooks - religious organizations have been (and still try) exerting control over society.
It's no wonder then, that a social/political force such as religion, places itself on an unassailable pedestal. Not only has it been established for hundreds of years, but it is still actively seeking to maintain the status quo.
I believe that secularism is gaining ground, the undoing of the largest roadblock to human progress will take time... and lots of it.

People are confused. They want GOD to be in their own image, so when you criticize their religion is like criticizing them. GOD never once claimed to be any relgious demnomination, but stated," I AM THE ALPHA AND OMEGA"
HE's not arguing HIS existence.
It's mankind arguing what their perceptions are. Nobody likes being wrong.
GOD is spirit and HE clearly says that!

Religion is special to people the way other things our special to people, right?
People don't like it when people bash homosexual people because it is rude.
People don't like it when people bash religious people because it is rude.
People don't like it when people bash non-religious people because it is rude.
Rude is rude. It doesn't change for the topic.

Religion is special if it is the love and mercy of the one true God, and of salvation thru His Son, Jesus.
It's not so special if it's the pursuit and worship of the many false gods (greed, lust, power, pride, allah, etc) meant to deceive and distract us.

If you do not accept Jesus and criticize him. You will burn eternally in hell. Why? Because he loves you.
