I had this teacher in highschool that was emotionally damaging to me. Its 10 years later, but I never forgot any of the words he said to me and the damage to my selfesteem never recovered. He picked on me the whole year just because I was quiet.

You would have an extremely hard time making a case, unless many incidents are documented, the school still has the records and documentation on file, you can prove harm, you can prove that the harm was caused by him, and you can get a lawyer to take the case. A long shot, probably impossible.

Why don't you try writing a letter to him, perhaps with the help of a counselor, to tell him what he did to you. You might or might not get an apology, but it might help to get your feelings out.

If you can't reach him anymore, you could try this exercise: write to him a letter full of all your feelings, anger, etc. Then write the letter back to you that you think he would say. Then, lastly, write a letter back to him expressing your closure of the situation - whether forgiving him or just telling him that you won't allow his actions to affect you anymore.

Any statute of limitations would have run by now anyway so it is a moot point. I would respectfully suggest that you try to contact the teacher and tell them (either via letter, phone or in person) of the damage they have done to you. They may not have realized it at the time, so leave room for a sincere apology.

It's been 10 years. If you haven't gotten over something that someone said about your being too quiet when you were a kid, then you have issues. Not to mention the fact that you are thinking about suing now. You are not a kid anymore; stop acting like one. Let it go.
(Did I hurt your feelings? Are you going to sue me for saying that? Get real.)
The statue of limitations is only 18 months anyway.

If you have a test done or talk to a doctor and they determine that you have a disorder due to this then yes. If you just didn't like that teacher, it would be hard to follow through. It may be a problem that it is 10 years later though.

You can sue anyone for anything. I doesn't mean you will collect anything, and attorneys begin somewhere in the $350/hr range and keep going up. Would it be worth it???

Why on earth would you do that? If it's been 10 years, you need to let it go and stop dwelling on this. If your self esteem is bad----you are an adult now and there is nothing that suing is going to fix. You need therapy. Don't blame your problems as an adult on something that happened in your childhood.

You only have a two year window for something like that even if it was documented.

Is money going to help your self esteem or change what was "done" to you 10 years ago? I think not.
