If I cry at night, typically right before I fall asleep, my eyes get very puffy the next day. Sometimes to the point where I can hardly open my eyes, and the folds in my eyelid disappear. How can I prevent this from happening?

Does anybody know WHY this happens in the first place?

Thank you Mark :). But I'm not crying every night, or even regularly. This happens to me maybe 4 times a year...it's just something that has always happened to me my entire life though. Thank you for your concern.

In the answers, so far, I've seen barely a mention of another aspect to your question... Why are you crying at night? (Often enough, that is, that you've seen this pattern with your eyes.)

I feel for you, and hope you aren't going through a tough time, or a depression. I don't mean to sound glib, but maybe that is the more important thing to focus on, to prevent both the puffy eyes and take care of whatever is making you cry. (Not that crying is bad; not at all. Just a possible indicator of problems. Unless you're just watching some great movies!)

Take care.

Just got your additional details... ok. :-)

If 3 times a week you put cucumber slices on your eyes for 20-30 minutes that help a lot. But also, I would buy an eye cream if I were you-I use Clean and Clear Morning Burst eye cream, and if you put it on at night before you go to bed and then again in the morning, it works absolute WONDERS- and only costs $5. It really will help, I promise you. If it still continues to get so bad that you cannot open your eyes, you should go see a doctor though, b/c that's not normal, and it could be something more serious. Good Luck!

Late nights, allergies, high salt intake or general stress can
cause the unsightly phenomenon of puffy eyes. Try any or all of
these remedies.

STEP 1: Splash your entire face with the coldest water you can stand immediately after you wake up. Use either cold tap water or a mixture of cold water and ice cubes in a large bowl or tub. Splash your face for up to 5 minutes, if possible.

STEP 2: Prepare two tea bags by soaking them in water, wringing them out and chilling them in the refrigerator or freezer. Once they are chilled, lie down and place the bags on closed eyelids for 5 to 10 minutes.

STEP 3: Cut two slices off a cold cucumber, each approximately 1 /2 inch thick. Place a slice on each eyelid for 5 minutes.

STEP 4: Drink lots of water. Puffy eyes often indicate water retention, which you can alleviate by drinking plenty of liquids; this flushes excess salt from your system.

STEP 5: Remove contact lenses each night before bed to avoid puffiness caused by lens irritation and drying.

STEP 6: Use an aloe-based eye-soothing gel or cream.

STEP 7: Avoid rubbing eyes. Tips & Warnings
Don't use a hemorrhoid cream near the eye area'it's unsafe and won't diminish puffiness.
If the problem persists, see your doctor. You may be reacting to dust, pets, medication or other irritants, or you may have an underlying medical condition.
Overall Things You'll Need
Ice cubes
Puffy Eye Moisturizers
Cucumbers
Aloe Vera Ointment
Tea Bags

You can't prevent your eyes from puffing up (aside from no longer crying right before falling asleep), but you can ease the puffiness by putting on a cold eye mask or washcloth over your eyes.

You should get up, wash your face with warm water. Then, put a very cold damp towel on your eyes for a little while. Then, I have this product by CLINIQUE. CLINIQUE "all about eyes" it says it reduces puffs, circles. This stuff works great. I get mine from Carsons. You should try it. It clears it up in like 4-5 minutes. It's a cream in a little glass jar (looks like the little round jar of lip gloss...depending on what size you get). I hope you feel much better girl with whatever is making you sad.

If you anticipate crying that night, you can put a washcloth (or a store bought) compress in the fridge. Wake up a half hour early and put it on your eyes -- and go lay back down. Your lids should be fine by your normal wake-up time. They sell gel masks at any store in the health and beauty department that can be refridgerated.

Get more sleep.

You can use cold spoons to get rid of puffy eyes. Just put wet spoons in the freezer for a few minutes, apply to eyes, puff will be gone.
