I was in a car accident and my neck, shoulders and back hurt from sitting all day. I am thinking of asking my boss for either one of these 2 alternatives:
1. work a bit longer each day and take Friday afternoons off to rest at home. no work time will be lost, but i'll still sit the same amount of hours.
2. work same hours daily and then take Friday afternoon off. That means I'll work 3 less hours per week & less pay but give my body a few extra hours to rest.
3.other alternatives? i can't afford to lose much pay....

1. Please see a chiropractor. I broke my neck in February. I work at home and sit in front of this PC almost 24/7. I don't take meds so I was in agony all down my back and arms. Then, in desperation, I saw a chiropractor and IMMEDIATELY all was much better. My entire spine was twisted up from muscle spasms and the original injury. I still see him once a week for $30.00 a visit. I'm an RN and I thought chiropractic medicine was "alternative". It definitely is NOT.
2. Therapeutic massage. The chiropractor should be able to refer you. Also, inquire about "rolfing". I'm not sure if that's how it's spelled but that's how it's pronounced. Rolfing is miraculous.
3. Discuss with a chiropractor alternative seating at work, then, approach your employer about arranging it for you.
4. Would it be possible to work from your home at the same job?
5. When you meet with your employer, introduce this concern by saying this is a temporary injury, not a permanent disability, and he or she will work with you and may be able to put your mind at ease about it all. You're worried and that's going to hurt your muscles and extend healing time. You will to be surprised, I think, when you talk with your employer and find how much better you're going to feel.
6. Use sick leave/vacation time if you have some.
7. Car accident insurance policies, yours and the other party's, if one was involved, might have provisions for financial support during recovery from accidents. Investigate that.
8. Take a long hot shower before going to work to ease muscles for several hours into the work day.
9. Take frequent breaks during the day and walk, stretch, etc.
10. Investigate unemployment benefits, not to quit your job, but to afford you the option of taking more days off during the work week.

Good luck.

I have a feeling that your boss is going to look at this as that you just want a longer weekend. You may want to try rolling a towel and placing behind your back while sitting...and making sure that you stand up and stretch often. You may be able to get those short Fridays if you get a doctor's excuse...but be very careful of all activities at home and work...if you are witnessed taking part in activities that are not *at home resting* you could be fired for this. good luck

I wouldn't ask for time off. Nothing that would give them a reason to let you go. Besides, taking one day off or an afternoon off is not going to help you during the remainder of the week. You need to get a better chair, make sure your monitor is at eye level and get up and move at least once an hour. That will help you to be less stiff until you recover.

Other options, simple get up and stretch. Increasing your work for 4 days will not help you and only make Friday a day of pain and aches. You need to get up from your desk every few hours, go for a walk, do stretches, keep your body active. Stretching throughtout the day is the best option.

I sit all day at work, but there are periods that I stand up. I can still type while standing and it will relieve some of the pressure on your back while still getting your job done. Don't ask for time off, before you know it, you'll have to "sit" in the unemployment line.

That just sounds like your trying to get Fridays off to me. Why not stand up and stretch a few times a day. And take mild pain releavers like Tylenol.

this dude I work with bought a massaging seat that attaches to his desk chair. He can do his work and get a massage at the same time. He says it really helps his back pain.
Maybe you should look into that.
