A canadian gallon is 5/4 of a US gallon. (Yes it's stupid I know) but a gallon in the US consists of 4 quarts. A gallon in Canada is actually 5 quarts!

You'll notice that the canadian numbers are exactly 5/4 higher than the US numbers. (or the US numbers are exactly 4/5 lower than the canadian numbers)

It's because a gallon is not always a gallon. Especially when it's a canadian gallon. :-p
(it has nothing to do with the metric system, which rules by the way)

The canadians use what is called an imperial gallon. The US uses a US gallon.

Canadians use metric system - where the US is using the English system. So the Canadian is probably Kilometers per liter or something similar where the US is Miles per Gallon.
