I believe the story is in John, but I could be wrong. An expert in Jewish law tests Jesus with the question: If loving our neighbor is one of our greatest commands, then who is our neighbor? This was, or course, a controversial question then and it still seems to be. Jesus then replies with a question to the expert.

Basically three people pass by a man that's just been mugged. One is a Jewish priest, another is an expert in the law, and the third is a Samaritan. At that time, Jews hated Samaritans. They actually prayed against them daily. The Samaritan is the only one that stops to help the mugged man (also Jewish). The Jewish individuals don't help because to come in contact with blood was considered to make you unclean. The Samaritan ignores that law to help anyway. Jesus asks: Who was the mugged man's neighbor?

The answer of course is the Samaritan, which would have been very difficult for the expert to answer due to his hatred of them. So I ask, who is your Samaritan (neighbor)?

I had a friend that did some terrible things to me that has caused me to suffer till this day, but as a good Christian I know that I must forgive, but I will never forget.

Recently this so called friend had something terrible happen. I have put my life on hold, lost sleep and doing what is necessary to support, comfort and counsel this person through a very difficult time.

It's no reward to help and love those who love you, but to over yourself to everyone in need.
Even those who have wronged you or people you do not feel a kinship with.

Well....I have to admit that when I see someone driving too fast or driving crazy, I hope that they get pulled over. I don't actually wish that they'd have an accident (I can be a real ***** but I'm not quite that bad), but if they did....I have to wonder if I'd drive on by.

I thought of this because the other day this guy got behind me and was making all kinds of gestures, and of course had to "wave" as he passed me. I really didn't hope he had an accident - but I thought to myself, better hope you DON'T have one and I'm your only hope.

The good Samaritan is any one who will help someone in need when one sees it; when one have the means, money, strength, ability, etc... to do so.

And if not sure how to help, to pray to God for wisdom in how to help or who to go to for help.

I'm an atheist. I tend to help others regardless of which culture they came from or what religious superstition they follow.
