What is the best way to clean them? He seems pretty irritated already when I get near them.

Cleaning you cat's ears (unless your vet has specified otherwise) is completely up to if you feel comfortable doing so. When we had cats with ear mites at the animal shelter I worked at we did clean their ears before administrating the medication because it did seem to help them. What we did, (which was how the vet that inspected our animals instructed us to) was use alcohol on a cotton ball and wipe the residue on the inside of the ear off. Just be careful and don't dig deeply with it, you don't want to damage his ear drums. If you aren't comfortable doing this though, I would suggest waiting until your next vet appointment and asking them to do it.

You just turn the bottle upside down and let a few drips go inside the cat's ear opening (not the ear, but inside the opening) and then massage the ear (close to the pet's face) so the medication can smear all over the inside of the ear (canal?). Follow the directions as to how often to give the drops, and do it to both ears. Certainly you can wipe off the excess on the outside of the ear. No, you don't need to clean the ears first. Sure he will be irritated already, but don't worry about that. Just get the medication down in there. Later the vet will clean out the pet's ears for you so you don't injure the ear drum.

Put the medicine in and after a few days then the ears will not be so sensitive and sore. Then you wipe gently all the stuff out of ear just wipe dont get down in the ear part. it will continue to work its way up so you can get rid of it. The mites are dead after one treatment unless he had a truly bad case.

Our vet treated for ear mites. It wasn't expensive. Some medicated drops in each ear, and he's been ear mite-free ever since. I'd highly recommend letting the vet do it instead of trying to do it yourself. It's much easier and usually more effective.

We took in a stray that had ear mites, The vet gave me drops to use and then I had to Q-tip the yuck out. If the cat is getting grumpy I would swaddle it up in a blanket first and be careful!!

It does work better if you clean them first, just so you know that the medication is making far enough in the ear.

Technically, no, you don't have to clean them first, but I always did (I used to work in a clinic). He will feel soooo much better afterards, but watch for flying mites when he shakes his head! Yuck!
