I`ve got a campervan and I think my old man plugs a 12v cable into the back of the tv ands runs it into the 12v fitting. The tv has to be 12v as well as mains. Has the tv got an inbuilt aerial? If it hasn`t you`ll need one. We use a caravan aerial strapped onto the back ladder as our tv is not a camping one, it`s a flat screen and dvd player. He runs the lead through the window. When we`re on mains we use a small indoor aerial. We`ve managed 5 nights without electric before, but you have to economise. You have great holidays in a campervan. Just make sure your leisure battery is fully charged!

OK I will try and keep this simple... to step up 12v to 110 or 240 you need an INVERTER the voltage differs depending on the country you are from, e.g. Europe 240 and US 110 you did not specify the voltage so that makes it harder to answer because I don't know what "mains" voltage you are referring to... but what you need is an inverter... now if you look on the back of your TV they may well be a switch to change the voltage as many electronics companies make a standard piece of equipment that can be used in both continents... if you are talking about 110 volts as your "mains" voltage Ignore this advice but if you are referring to 240 volts I would suggest switching the voltage if you can to 110 this will allow you to save money when buying an inverter... ok then on the back of the TV will be an information plate that tells you how much current (watts) the TV uses, write this number down and the take the info to an electronics supplier and ask for a 110 volt (or 240 if the TV can't be switched) Inverter that can handle a power draw of X amount of watts, the person in the shop should be able to advise you of the size (rating of watts) that you need. It would probably be a good idea to take the TV with you if you are not sure of the watts consumption. I would also suggest that if you think that you may want to use more equipment that just a TV in your camper then get a more powerful inverter because if you plug something else in to the Inverter and exceed the maximum load specified you will blow it up and may need to buy a new one… not wishing to get technical but if you are asked to chose from different types the newest technology and the best quality one would be one based on switch mode power supply, but it may be more expensive. Hope that this makes sense and helps.

Well, these people are half right.

Yes, an inverter will convert 12 VDC to 120 VAC house current, however, you have to add up the total watts consumed by everything you plan on running from the inverter and find an inverter that can produce the same amount of watts or higher continously.

For instance:

TV - 200 watts
VCR - 50 watts
misc - 200 watts

450 watt inverter is needed. Any inverter over 150 watts will have to wired directly to the battery. The current wire size in a cigarette lighter won't handle that amount of amperage and a fire is sure to happen. Wire sizes to use should be stated in the operators manual of the inverter.

An inverter. you can use it to change DC (your 12 volt) to AC and boost to 110 or 220 volt. They are readily available (in the U.S. try J.C. Whitney or Radio Shack) and inexpensive. You will have to size it to the load you will place on it so see how much current the TV draws (from nameplate on back in watts) take that info with you when purchasing to be sure you get the right size. Or just get the largest available for a reasonable price.

you need a 230volt to 12 volt transformer, then a converter to change ac to dc, ( also a zener diode would keep the supply stable).
