Would this not be a better solution than a. letting people in but not having jobs for them so they are supported by the welfare state and b. letting/not letting them in on a nationality basis (ie Australians can get working visas easily for the UK whilst Indians, for example, can't)? For instance, you could visit a country on a tourist visa and if you could prove you had found a job there you could stay. (Of course asylum seekers are a different matter and would still be allowed in without the job offer).

I worked in Australia (I'm British) and found the system ridiculous as I couldn't legally work unless a company sponsored me (which is a big commitment for any company). But anyone can get round this by registering with a (legitimate) private agency set up to offer sponsorship to foreigners with a job offer (at a cost).

because then we wouldnt make as much money. if we let people have freedom then the economy of the world would go down. to be honest it just a load of rubbish to make sure people have no freedom and so they spend all their time working for their country as it is now too much effort to see the world and live somewhere else because it is too expensive to. if people could just move around willy nilly the stupid governments wouldnt have enough money to fund their bmw's and helicopters for the followin year,

That is what happens here as long as you are from an EU country. The only reason they are trying to put a limit on now is because when Poland joined the EU near enough the entire population moved to England as yes we do have better prospects for them, problem is so many of them came we cannot possible support them all - eg housing, jobs, NHS etc... Thing is you see they all want to move here so these so called open doors throughout Europe is really a one way ticket. As a lot of Brits wouldn't want to live in another Euro country especially one worse off then ours and also most of us can't speak bugger all languages apart from our own so wouldn't get a job anywhere anyway. Whereas they can all speak English that is the reason why.

I am an Australian living in th US - you need to understand how difficult it is to get a job in Australia. there are far less possiblities then in USA for example.

The reason you need a company sponsorship is primarily because of the commitment. It would be ridiculous to be offered a position which may in turn be unstable. Then Australia would end up like the US with its Government having to give support to non citizens.

To slacken the rules would be asking for further unemployment problems for locals and be a strain on the welfare system.

If we opened our doors to immigrants more and more immigrants would come, and this is because other countries like the UK have a better economy. In the EU there is now a policy aimed at dealing with problems in the countries where immigrants originate from because immigration can cause labour shortages in certain sectors - an example if this is Poland, they lack people to work in various sectors of their health service because a lot of them migrated for better pay elsewhere. Sorting out the problems in other countries will bring more stability in migrant flows, and also mean more stability in labour markets, as well as the chance for improvement of economies in the countries where migrants come from. I am not saying immigration is a bad thing, but there does need to be some sort of control.

I think some people are missing the point of this question - it is not what we have now in the EU!! What we have now is that people can go live in another country whether or not they have a job. What I think the questioner is posing is that rather than letting anyone in, just let those in who do have jobs. As far as getting undesirables in - we don't check people coming into the UK from Europe so what's the difference?

Sounds plausible...but, I'm not confident that runaway migration is 100% such a hot idea...and there'd be a lot of people finding 'jobs' as quick as they could forge the papers if you did that...there's economic imbalance in the world, the countries that need more money need to become more modern...it's a long, drawn-out process where you develop your infrastructure, train your people, and make money by participating in national and global trade etc...the best investment that poor countries can make is building a lot of schools for their citizens...get people up and running and doing this stuff...

Because if immigration got really bad over here and british people were finding it hard to get jobs they'd be forced to emigrate when they didn't really want to. Also as many other countries do not have such high standard of living it might mean someone being forced to give up his standard of living and move to a crappy country just to get a job.

I want the right to stay and work i the country of my birth thanks.

Sounds good to me. We want to be able to work anywhere in the world ourselves, so it's very hypocritical to say some people aren't allowed to work here. There have always been a lot of Brits living and working abroad, but the numbers have rocketed in the last few years, with cheap properties in Spain etc. We should treat people the way we want to be treated ourselves, not put up restrictions that we wouldn't like to be faced with if we were in their situation.

I think it's a great idea. That's how things should be. Anyone who can work well should deserve a job, and anyone who can support him or herself should deserve to stay where he or she wants. After all, the jobs should be offered because of the person's ability, not because of nationality.
