The country is already united. (reference name: UNITED States of America)

The fact that we are a rarity in the world populous in not having an 'Official' language is part of what has made this country wonderfully diverse. People from any culture in any country can come here and they have an option for how much they want to assimilate. Many immigrants choose to learn English because for the last 4 centuries it has been the accepted form of communication between all cultures and governing bodies.

Making an 'Official' language seems like a good idea. Governments wouldn't have to pour tons of money into translating our documents into the 300 + languages spoken in this country, but other than that, what good will it do?

Every government body speaks English, every corporation that deals with customers does, too. The problem with creating an official language (I advise you to cite France as an example) is that you must then establish a governing body to regulate the language and then GUARANTEE that everyone speaks that standard of English. That will cost the country a lot more than what we spend translating documents and will shatter the concept of a melting pot. Instead of a country where we all melt together, we will be a mold: Conforming everyone to a certain standard of thinking. The idea is ultimately Fascist.

Is having everyone speak and talk correctly worth the tax dollars? Honestly, I've seen the majority of responses to this question and I will say that you can't even write ENGLISH correctly. You will be just as poorly affected as immigrants if not worse...

Yes. Effectively, it already is: the court system functions in English, the legislature debates and passes laws in English, and contracts are written in English. Furthermore, anyone seeking naturalization as a US citizen must be able to read, write, and speak English. I would support any effort to recognize English as the official language of the country.

I think that ENGLISH should be used in our country because that is what language we speak. I think that if people come in our country to live and work here than they need to learn it. Don't make street signs and other public signs in other languages etc., make them learn. My family has a Cajun French heritage (and there are still members that speak french on a daily basis where we live) but there are no signs etc. in french......they had to learn how to speak English too.

that statment is not correct...although english should be the official language of the contry. That doesn't mean that everyone "has" to speak it all the time...it just means they need to communicate and understand english to make everyone function better. nothing against other languages.
