She went to heard start and has always loved school, but she keeps telling me that she hates her teacher, and hates the kids in her class, and i even told her that if she switches schools then she will have no friends, and she is ok with that. What should I do? I have been talking to the principal, and I have a meeting today at 3:30 with them again, but I am getting nowhere. Should I make her stick it out? should I change her class? should i change schools? what would you suggest? she is only five, and I dont want this to become an ongoing problem.

It depends on WHY she hates school.

If she just isn't getting the attention she wants, or is getting in trouble for her bad behavior, then she needs to learn that the world doesn't revolve around her...and that when you behave life improves.

If there's really a problem with the teacher, or another student, then that's different.

Talk to her in more detail. Find out WHAT it is that she hates. WHY does she hate her teacher? (Maybe it's as simple as because the teacher is making them follow the rules!) Are there more rules and more work than she had in preschool? Maybe that is part of the problem?

Don't JUST talk to the principal.....talk to her teacher. The teacher is the one who deals with her every day and knows what is going on. Find out how she is behaving in class? How is she doing academically? Does the teacher feel she is struggling? Does she seem to have friends?

Is she going full day or half day? Is this a change from her head start schedule?

Is she getting enough sleep and eating well? If not, that could make focusing in school hard and make her unhappy.

Work with the teacher and principal to come up with a plan.

I went through this with my daughter to the point of taking her to head shrinks and chiropractor's guess what they even said it was the home environment which it wasn't nothing was different. In the end I discovered what it was every day there was a girl behind my daughter pulling her hair and she was afraid to open her mouth and tell anybody because she didn't want to get into a fight. Talk to your child there is something going on in the class or school which she is trying to get away from no joke. I thought my kids would tell me everything but she didn't because she thought I would be mad at her. I would talk to her classmates and get to the bottom of it don't change her school then you are showing her it is better to run away then fight a good fight and plus she will think it is the right way to go when there are problems for real. You can't run away for your problems you must learn to stand your ground and be strong this is a learning experience she /he needs to learn right here and right now. Sit them down and go over the whole day each day you will figure out what is going on assure them that no matter what you will protect them from any kind of harm in school or out. Good Luck

Ask her teacher if you can sit in on a class, or just show up and watch. Maybe your child's aversion is unneccessary. Kindergarten is different than head start so maybe your child needs some time to adjust to the change. Children can often blow things out of perspective, such as a teacher getting on to them for acting out of behavior. They may "hate" their teacher, but the teacher wasn't acting out of behavior and the child will learn that. I would check in on seeing your child in class first before switching schools. What's going to keep her from hating the next teacher and the next? Will you home-school? Best of luck!

Talk more with your daughter to find out what it is about school that she hates. It's good that you're already in contact with the school about it. Maybe you can have the principal sit in during class a few times to observe your daughter. I would not suggest trying to observe on your own because your presence will change everything for your daughter, and you won't be able to see what's really going on. If your school has a guidance counselor you could also have her sit in. It might be beneficial to have your daughter talk with the guidance counselor also. Good luck with it.

At age five, children love to say the word hate and one minute they hate something.........the next they like it. What your child is saying to you is that she is in a new environment that is strange and she needs your help in getting used to it. Switching schools or even classrooms teaches our children to give up instead of workingit out. You don't want to do that.
Find out what is causing the anxiety. She is young and may not be able to fully express her concerns. Reassure her, ask her the good things that happened. go and visit the school often. Ask teacher to tell the positive things that happened. Praise her...etc.
Manychildren do say this because they want to be home.......who doesn't!

We had a similar issue when our daughter started first grade. She always loved pre-school and love kindergarten last year. I think her expectations were a bit skewed, as may be the case with your daughter. She needs t stick it out...reassure her that things will get better for her, but that she has to give it a chance and make an effort as well. Absolutely, you should discuss this with her teacher, WITH your daughter. They both need to have an understanding as to what each other's expectations are. Good luck!!! It will get better...

I would probably make her stick it out for a while, but if she still "hated" it after a month or so, I would have her switch classes - it already sounds like she doesn't have any friends if she "hates the kids in her class" so it won't affect her much to put her into another classroom.

Change schools. When you tour a school, pay very close attention to the demeaner and attitudes of the students as well as the staff, as well as their curriculum and decor (lots of pics, colors, words, etc.). Plan to stay at the school for about an hour and a half, by then no one is acting anymore. You want to do this right away so as not to ruin your child's view learningand school for life. Very much luck to you on this.
