Why do believers always credit God with something instead of giving themselves a pat on the back for obtaining it themselves?

I know SO MANY people that say "It's because of God and pray that I got that promotion!" or "I want to thank for this Music Award!"

It's your own hard work that got you your work promotion, putting in the extra hours etc.

It's your own hard work that gets you anywhere in life, why don't you take credit for excelling your own life instead of giving it to him?

For us believers all praise and glory are His. See for us we understand that even though we have worked hard and done are very best at something that dosent mean that we are going to move ahead. Certain things have to be in order, like the other talented people that you are up against to get that promotion. Some how you got it. Now that was not you but God that created that opportunity for you and got you in your new position. That's the most simple way i can write why we give Him the Glory in that type of situation. Besides He's God, why wouldn't you give him all the glory.

Well perhaps it has to do with the fact that I can not recollect CREATING MYSELF and THE UNIVERSE.
So I have come to the Conclusion that there must be someone Greater than I, whom I should be thankful to.
And infact I am not gonna go back down the bloodlines and find some ape or monkey was my great, great, TIMES 1,000,000 or whatever, Grandfather.
That is a crock of crap if you ask me.
So I thank God, for everything which He has given me.
And when I put Him first rather than put myself up on a pedastol, I seem to see more wonderful things happen in my life.
When I neglect God, or put HIM on the back burner, my life usually seems to go to crap as well.
So that is my own personal reason, ya know...

Heres my little story:
When my husband and I were getting ready to get married, he suddenly got a lung infection that put him out of work for about a month. We lost $2000 that we really needed to pull off the wedding. We had been really stressed about it, when one night at a Bible Study, we both decided to just not worry about it and let God handle our situation.
Right after the study, our pastor asked us to come into his office and he told us that some people from the church decided to donate $2000 to our wedding. We hadn't told people how much we lost, we hadn't even told a lot of people that we lost money at all, but they gave us the exact amount we had lost!
God does provide everything we need. Yes, it was from some of our church families' wallets, and if they had not been obedient to God, we would not have gotten the money, but God was directing the entire thing, and His people were faithful to His desire that they be generous.
There have been many times like this where my husband and I have received unexpected gifts from people when the only One we told about our need was God, Himself. I am learning to forget about worrying, because it doesn't do me any good. I just pray and ask for God's direction, but mostly He just gets me to wait until I can see what His plans are. They usually require very little action on my part besides trusting Him (which is tough! I'm a doer!), and He just gives.

Many of this is false I'd say. I am a Christian and I pray to God without doubting.. As long as you pray without doubting, he'll show it in a way that man doesn't understand. Such as, I pray that this person would go to prison because he does drugs, God will most likely give me patience or help me to gain this patience I need to deal with this person.

I hope you understand what i mean.

God Bless!

P.S. Suzanne has a great point! Read her answer! It explains the other half that i left out.

LOL @ music awards. "I want to thank God" "Praise the lord for this" I agree 100%. God doesn't exist. They should know that the hard work, long hours got them the promotion. Doesn't "God" have better things to do than wait and push things along so you get things done?

Hmmmm ... Where does our ability to work hard and put in the extra hours come from? Where do any of our abilities to get anywhere in life and excelling come from? Perhaps from the selfsame Source from which we ourselves originate ... the Lord God, Creator and King of the Universe?

Because you should give all glory to God. Without Him you could be or do nothing. You think it's all your hard work but if He did not give you knowledge and strength you could not accomplish your goals. Remember what He gives, He can also take away so thank Him for your good fortune. Whether it be wealth, happiness or simply because you could rise up from your bed this morning and walk. There are those who can't do these things.

I have heard many unsaved people thank god for winning music awards, the lottery and etc.

I don't worry about such petty things.

Christians thank God for everything because God gives us everything; we didn't earn it, as explained here:

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Peace.

Well, sure I did the hard work, but then who do I have to thank for my health, and my talents, and my mental abilities.

But really, it's humility, even if you don't want to direct your thanks to a God, stepping away from ones pride and being grateful is a good quality.
