For the same reason that many republicans don want Bush around. However over hyped and spun, there is a negative light on Kerry right now that he doesn't want to spill over onto another candidate.
This isn't rocket science.

As much of a dufus as he is, Kerry spoke the truth: how many politicians' kids are giving up their lives for the Iraqi war? NONE! They're all holed up in ivy-league colleges, protected from the evils and dangers of Bush's stupid war.
Only kids who can't afford to go to college, or who don't work hard enough to stay in college, get 'stuck in Iraq'.
Kerry's remarks were ammunition for the Republicans; it's best he stay out of the limelight to prevent further fallout. -RKO-
